I don't believe the cases you just linked are the ones the poster is referring to.

IIRC, the bodies that poster was referring to were found on Okaloosa Island, (most of which is government property... part of the AFB) in the sand dunes.

I'm looking now for the cases, but from my memory I think they were eventually linked to a serial killer or something (vague memory of mine). I don't see them listed as unsolved on the Okaloosa SO website, but neither of the ones just posted from the FDLE website are listed there either.

Yes, those are the ones, but they are from 1973, I mentioned them in my original posting. Later, I read that one of these 2 cases was linked by gun barrell evidence to the convicted killer of another girl, that was posted on another site that I cannot recall now. What I was wondering, ...as I looked at the FDLE site that lists these 2 cases from 1973 (among other unsolved cases) is why aren't Joyce Malinka and other cases listed, like the little girl killed off Merrill road here in Arlington...she was on her way to school, taking a shortcut through the woods. The only thing I've seen on her is the clipping from the Jacksonville Journal that I mentioned in an earlier post. The thread here about the little Schoen girl, the one that mentions the Anderson sisters and the other cases from roughly the same time ...summer of 1974 ...appears to have no mention of this little girl and it happened during that same time period...I don't get it.

By the way, I neglected to thank birdie74 for transcribing those three articles...kudos once again to you, birdie!

You're very welcome.

I don't know why I thought it said those cases were from '74. I must have been looking at the other one they referred to where the girl got shot in '74.

I heard back from the JSO officer, and it turns out the Malinka case ended in the arrest of a man and woman who were sentenced to state prison. It's classified as a solved case.

No other details?

That's all I know. I don't know who or when they were arrested. I'm glad to know it was solved, but it would be interesting to know the details now that we've read about the case.

Maybe it's me but doesn't it sound odd that with all the "scoping" of this case - all the information the posters have found - all the transcribing of articles that there isn't one about the capture and conviction of those responsible for Judy's death?

Is that normal? I know the case was an older one but you'd think the police would want the recognition for a job well done.

Something's missing.

Yeah, I thought it was strange too. I guess the Florida Times-Union had other things to report on, or didn't consider it important enough to print.
I haven't been back here in a while...it's just so discouraging be confronted with case after case of people getting away with the worst crimes. I guess even true crime television has us spoiled into expecting a resolution, whether it's a quick one or not.

Actually, the paper probably did cover it when the killers were arrested and tried. I plan to go back to the library soon and try to find the articles, but I haven't had time yet. It's doubtful I'll find it without a time frame though. I only found the ones about her death because we found a record of her death in the SSDI. The Florida Times-Union only has archives available online going back to '96, and it's not on newspaperarchives.com either.

When I looked up the last articles, I only went through ones covering a period of a few weeks. Since there's no search engine it's a matter of going through the microfilm until it's found.

I've been planning to email the local TV stations to see if they can give more info on the time frame and the killers, so I'll go ahead and do that tomorrow. I emailed 2 of them early on and didn't hear back, but that was before we knew when she died, so they wouldn't have had much to go on. I'll let you know if I get a response.

Also, it didn't sound like the officer had the file in front of him when he emailed me, but he had checked in and realized that the case was classified as solved and had resulted in convictions. He said he wasn't sure on the length of time (in the prison sentences). It didn't seem at all suspicious to me. I know he's busy, so I think he just wanted to let me know what he could without spending too much time looking up all the details.

I'm glad he let us know about the arrests before any of us spent too much time trying to solve a solved case. I do still want to find out the details about it now though since we've looked this far, and it just feels incomplete without knowing who did it and why... I'm curious. It especially seemed weird to me that a man and a woman were convicted.

Thanks birdie....what you said makes sense. I misunderstood the context totally.

I could also be used to media coverage "fanfare" when it comes to solving crimes and trials and such. It never occured to me that an arrest, trial and conviction could happen without hoopla and CNN.

I applaud the investigators on this one. They certainly are deserving of it.

That's ok. I should have explained it more fully.

I just emailed the news departments for channels 4 and 12 here in Jax. I'll let you know if I hear anything, but if I don't then I'll just try going through the microfilms again until I find it. It'll be several days before I can get to the downtown library though.

If anyone else in Jacksonville has extra time and wants to look too, that would be great. Just let me know so we don't waste time checking the same reels. I think it's better to wait a few days anyway to see if we hear from either news station... no point in looking for a needle in a haystack when someone already knows where the needle is.

In regard to Joyce Ann Matrinka, I was a senior in high school when she was raped and murdered. My senior year was 1972-73. In the afternoon and evenings I worked at a ladies' apparel store on the North side of town. I am pretty sure it was 1973 as to when this happened to me and it was shortly after her death. There were warnings as you mentioned to beware of this man. I was attractive and I also drove a vintage car that was easy to spot. I began seeing a man first at where I worked, then at my bank, at a restaurant nearby while dining with a friend. He would just appear and watch me. It became disconcerting and I told the women I worked with about him. At one point I saw him get into his car and made a mental note. Later, I had just gotten to work when I noticed in the parking lot his car. He was driving around trying to find a parking space. We called security who then called the police. Within minutes, they were at the store. They questioned me and then showed me a sketching of what the man looked like. I immediately recognized him as the man who had been following me for a couple of weeks. I told the police that I'd just seen him in his car (described the car to them) trying to find a parking place in front of the store. They immediately called for a back up car and left to try and catch him before he got out of the parking lot. I do not know if they did catch him; however, I stopped driving the vintage car and quit working. I was soon to leave for college. I never had any more problems. I know that doesn't give you any answer as to if they caught him before he spotted them, but at least you know that he did stalk again.

goo boo...I wrote just now a response, but it took me to the end of the thread. I just joined web sleuths for the express purpose of your post. I found it via Google. I was a senior in high school in 1972-73, lived and worked on the north side of Jacksonville. After school each day, I would go to work at a ladies' apparel shop. At that time, I drove a very nice vintage car that was very unique and was very attractive. In 1973 (I believe, because it was getting close to the time when I would go away to college), I began noticing a man following me. I'd heard of the crime and her death at Regency Square and my parents had ingrained in me to always be aware of what was going on around me. He first would show up where I worked, then one afternoon I was at my bank, which was across from where I worked, and there he was. He wasn't in line, just standing and staring at me. He made my skin crawl. The next time he appeared was at a restaurant, close by again to where I worked. I and a girlfriend were at a booth when I looked up and he was across from me at another booth, again staring at me. I remember that at some point I'd seen him getting into his car and made a mental note as to what it looked like. Yet, a few days later, I'd just gotten to work and was looking out the window into the parking lot when I saw his car circling the parking lot. He was trying to get a parking space close to the store. I told my boss and she immediately called security who in turn called the police. Within minutes, they got to the store. I told them what I'd experienced. They showed me an artist's rendition of the rapist/murderer and it was him. They called for another car and quickly went to see if they could see him and his car. They were concerned that he may have seen them and he would've been scared off. I immediately stopped driving the high-profile car and also quit my job since it wasn't too long before I'd be going to college (out of state). I never heard of his capture, but at least they knew he had stalked me and knew, then, what car he drove (I wasn't able to get his license plate #). It has haunted me to this day and that's why a few days ago I decided to input key words into Google to see if there was anything showing his arrest. I know this isn't much, but at least you know the police were vigilant in trying to find him and that he did go to another part of Jax to stalk again. If you ever learned what became of him, please let me know. Thanks so much.
