Police Baffled by Disappearance of 'Entire Family' in Florida

Published November 23, 2011

| FoxNews.com

Authorities are appealing to the public for information after they realized that an entire family disappeared from a motel in Florida, MyFoxOrlando.com reports.

The investigation began when Karen Burger, 57, was reported missing by her father in August. About six weeks into the search for her, detectives realized that Burger's daughter, Christina, her son-in-law, Allen Hilgefort, and the couple's two-year-old son were also missing.

The four family members were last seen at a motel in Edgewater, Fla., in July, according to authorities.

Karen Lee Burger, 57, her daughter Christina Thompson, 38, Karen's son-in-law, Allen Hilgefort, 33, and Karen's grandson, Wyatt Hilgefort , 2, from New Smyrna Beach, Florida are missing.

Maxwell Lee, Karen's father, reported her missing in August. Lee told the police that his daughter had trouble with alcohol and drugs and had taken off in the past. When authorities began investigating the disappearance they realized not only was Karen missing, but three members of her family.

IDK but the photos of the 3 look like mug shots to me. I wonder if they were in trouble with the law in the past.

Hope they're found. I'm very concerned for the 2 year old.

I think we all know what happened here. Mom booted them out. They had to pack up and stay at the motel. All 4 were last seen there...........and well..the rest will be solved in a day or 2.

Christina Hilgefort is the missing woman's daughter. Police said the couple are possible witnesses, and may be driving a white 1994 Ford Ranger with an extended cab.

I just read the article on Fox News and it is a strange happening to have an entire family missing, although it has happened before.

I find it concerning that Karen's father waited a month before reporting his daughter missing as her going missing for a month was not unusual. Karen having issues with drugs and alcohol is a problem that may figure into the disappearance.

I wonder if something happened to Karen - mom - and her daughter and son-in-law have gone into hiding?

Police said there has been no activity with any of their bank accounts.

"We're basically missing an entire family," detective Sgt. Eugene Griffith said."

So bizarre. So the 57 year-old grandmother was reported missing after being gone a month and it wasn't until 6 weeks later that they realized the rest of the family was missing. There is a lot more to this story.

One of the articles says that the family didn't have any money to pay for the hotel and Lee (the dad/grandpa) came every day to pay their bill. In that context, it's weirder that he waited a month to report her missing and even more so that he didn't mention the other family members.

ETA: It is also possible that the article is misquoting the hotel clerk though, since the dad/grandpa's name is bracketed. Maybe she meant the s-i-l? Unclear.

Entire family missing in Florida

Nov 23, 2011 - 20 hours ago
Burger's father had waited for a month to report the disappearance since his daughter has a history of alcohol and drug issues and has apparently been out of contact before.

Both families have not made any use of their individual bank accounts since they went missing and the authorities are classifying them as 'endangered'.

Burger was last seen at the All-Suite Motel in Edgewater, where her daughter and son-in-law were staying, on July 25.

After Christina and Allen Hilgefort checked out a few days later on July 28, they also disappeared.

Bank accounts for all three have remained untouched and they have had no known contact with anyone since July, police said.

- Karen was last seen on the 25th
- Karen's daughter and family checked out on the 28th

Nobody else notice the young couple missing since July? No fiends, co-workers, neighbours, mailmen in Daytona Beach and/or New Smyrna Beach?
The two have known addresses on S. Atlantic Ave in Daytona Beach and the 800 block of Corbin Park Road in NSB.
