Here is another:

There's another dad out there who believes his son is till alive after watching him jump off the boat a week ago because his dad was angry he was so drunk.

It would be very difficult to accept that searching for your child was ending. You have to really consider what it would be like to be experiencing this. A lot of people would hope for a miracle for quite awhile. These families need empathy.

Yeah. The dad said LP was an expert diver so he is still alive.. the denial :(
Even if he was an expert diver, was he wearing a wetsuit when he jumped overboard? Did he have diving equipment? I understand denial but this is extreme.

My oldest is a Master Diver and has life saving skills should they be needed. So maybe that is what the father is referring to? But that means nothing when you’re in the middle of the ocean, without any dive equipment or tanks.

Sure, he had the skill to keep himself afloat for hours, provided he survived the splash down and wasn’t under the influence of anything.

The family needs that hope for their own grief processing at this point.

Kevin McGrath is still missing.

His NamUs:

Kevin was a passenger on cruise Line which disembarked on September 4th, 2023. The missing person was on vacation with various family members and was to meet with them in the terminal at the Port of Miami. However, the missing person never disembarked. At which time, his family reported the incident to the cruise line, who initiated a search of the ship, which yielded negative results.

Seriously? No updates yet? I'm just surprised because if I remember correctly he just vanished, no proof he went overboard, is that right?

Carnival doesn’t have CCTV of him going overboard, no. Sometimes these things get missed, though, see earlier upthread where I posted an article how the family of Tyler Bartlett was told the cruise company didn’t have CCTV but later found it.

Although we don’t know the time it happened, if he fell overboard, IMO the chances of it being anything else just seems very small. Like .0001% small. He was seen at 3:30 am on a dance floor.

Again, if he did go overboard, the chances are unfortunately really high that his body will never be found.

There are recent cases where someone SEES a person going overboard yet they aren’t able to locate/recover them even with the rescue and search parties going out right away and knowing where they fell off.

I've never been on a cruise but I always thought there were alarms, etc. I had no idea someone could go overboard and the crew not be alerted to it. It's scary to think about. Rethinking my future travel plans for sure.

Same here -- never been on a cruise.
Seems like there would be some way of "seeing" someone go overboard -- via an alarm of some kind. Scary.

New cruise ships do have - or are supposed to - MOB (man overboard) sensors installed.

I'm going to sound like a cruise ship shill, but it's supposed to be pretty difficult to accidentally go overboard. Railings are supposed to be at least 42". Older ships that don't have MOB sensors are supposed to have a comprehensive CCTV system, but there are of course blind spots. Cruise ships do have a responsibility to keep guests safe, and use security patrols, CCTV, and bartenders trained to not over-serve guests.

According to World of Cruising, from 2009 to 2019, there were 218 man overboard incidents, out of 255 million guests. The odds are extremely low.

The only way you are 'falling' off a ship is if you purposely do so, are doing something you shouldn't be (such as sitting on the railing) or someone else is involved.
