What a cute little boy he was! RIP Lane.:rose:
yes, just adorable. Seeing a 'current' picture of him just breaks my heart even more. I cannot even imagine what his parents are going through. A couple months ago, hobby had to work in FL (we're from WI, so completely different dangers here). Hubby knew what it meant for the beach to be 'red flagged'; I had no idea. I will admit I am a total helicopter mom to my 4 year old. However, it took the lifeguard blowing her whistle at us a LOT of times for me to realize my daughter & I were really the only ones in the water. We were only a couple feet out in the water; water was maybe 7" when a wave came in. I still let her walk a little in the water at the edge of shore; she had a life jacket, My hand clamped to hers, and I walked on the side nearest to the water. We saw a washed up jellyfish & that surprised me. I never even thought twice about alligators.
With this happening, I have been going back in my mind (hubby is back at the base this week; we are in WI), to oh my god what if something like this happened to us. Hubby was on base, so we were at our hotel beach in Jacksonville Beach, but also went to Magic Kingdom. It is all too relateable; IMO a freak accident that could happen to anyone. Such a numbing feeling just reflecting on this; I cannot fathom what these parents are feeling & I hope they have a lot of support to help get them through this awful time.

This is just heartbreaking but, you read of residents who get complacent, and are attacked. I don't put blame the parents. I can't really blame Disney. People do not understand that wading in ankle deep water is dangerous in Fla. People also ignore signs no matter what they say b/c they just don't realize that you can't see the gators nor that they are so fast. Alligators are everywhere in Fla. It's almost impossible to keep them out. They just pulled an 11' one out of a storm drain in Ft. Myers. It had gotten in there and gotten trapped and died. Even if they could keep the gators out, they now have non-native constrictor snakes populating the state to the point that they have put an open season on them. Do not get into any fresh water nor near the banks. Especially at night. That's when they feed. Adults have been grabbed and killed. Gators will even travel in salt water for short distances and come out onto the beaches. Also, check the pools before getting in!

My children and granddaughters leave for Orlando on Sunday for their pre-planned vacation to the Magic Kingdom. They always stay at Resorts as they did in San Antonio in April. (Robert Redford was at the pool and my daughter sent a picture of him to me :)

Lane's splashing and audible exuberance likely alerted and attracted the alligator. While weeping as my chest heaved, I watched the livestream presser this afternoon. The baby boy was found about 10' from where he was taken and located in water nearly 6' deep. You've seen the pictures. It was quite dark on the beach of the lagoon as a movie was being shown.

The term "lagoon" conjures many images to mind and there are not at all like the ones in the movie "The Blue Lagoon". That water is murky. Most of the bank if filled with tall grass. The lagoon is used for boats to transport tourists to and fro. Fishing nor swimming is allowed.

RIP Lane Graves - Little Angel, you are gone too soon. +
Thank you goes to Nebraska for what I anticipate to be a loving, respectful, warm welcome when he arrives back to his home state.

Oh My Word!!!!! According to the man/lawyer/adviser/speaker, if this were to go to court and based on an insurance company policy the monies worth of a child would be very little because of being 2yrs old compared to the worth value of an adult.

The parents would be a total issue.

I just can't imagine trying to put money on a child because of the age, insurance companies.....well I am speechless.

I remember reading that the reason why 9/11 victims got about $1.8 million/each is because a lot of the victims were high-earning professionals, so their total earning over the course of their lifetimes was significant. Your post reminded me of that.

I feel like a lawsuit could come down to exactly where the child was when the incident happened. That's assuming that Disney offers to settle and the family refuses the offer and it goes to a jury. There's been so many conflicting reports. I wonder if Disney got the whole thing on camera? At least enough to tell where Lane and his parents and the gator were when it happened?

While I understand your sentiment, we have to be careful about becoming a nanny-state. We have warnings not to take warning tags off of things!

Not trying to be insensitive but if we are going to put barricade fences around Florida to protect people, you'll have to cover a lot of territory.

We have miles of ocean beaches that have sharks
We have lagoons, swamps, lakes & creeks that have alligators

RIP lil' guy

Moo

I understand what you're saying. But, I never said fence all of Florida in. I only mentioned cordoning off large water areas, specifically IN a park built on swamp land that folks pay quite a lot of money to go to. Even though this is the first time it's happened in the park, it's a tragedy waiting to happen when littles are such easy prey.

I saw the news about Lane on my homepage today, and what a beautiful little boy :( My heartfelt condolences to his family for their tragic loss of their child. Wishing them all the love and support to comfort them at such a devastating time of their lives :rose:

So sad yet again :( I know as kids coming to FL from abroad everyone did do everything and beyond to warn us about the alligators. I vividly remember the guide or someone telling us the hotel swimming pool and yacuzzi are safe, do not even go near other ponds or lakes. Many totally random people as well. We did swim in the sea though. I do also recall how this fear of alligators vanished just in Disney. Not that I swam anywhere or went near anything. I was adequately warned... I'm a bit speechless at Lane's death. I don't feel comfortable blaming anyone but just very sad and sorry.

Why on earth was a 2 year old wadding in a lake at 9.30pm and not in bed?

A Disney official said Wednesday the company plans to “thoroughly review” its alligator warning signage around the resort. The company official spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because Disney has yet to prepare a formal statement on the matter.

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said his department and the state wildlife agency would look into the issues of warning signs around Seven Seas Lagoon at The Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, where Disney had posted “no swimming” signs but no warnings about the presence of alligators.

Yup, Disney's at fault.

Yup, Disney's at fault.

Whether they're at fault or not the best thing they can do is quietly pay the family a handsome amount of compensation, loudly apologise to the world (possibly while setting up an alligator awareness charity scheme) and then actively set about changing signage / warnings and revisiting their alligator capture policies. I hope this won't turn into any kind of slanging match.

Disney "comping" rooms at the Grand Floridian:

" Various parts of the property were on lockdown, and no one from the resorts was cluing in the guests. After some complaining, the resort offered free rooms, which averaged $560 a night. It's unclear if everyone got comped, but if they did ... with 867 rooms that's nearly half a mil."

I might if I was going on a backpacking trip or something but no, I don't plan a trip to Disneyland and research wildlife in Anaheim. You don't think you're having a case of hindsight 20/20 here?

I went to a resort in Puerto Vallarta in February and before I went I looked up what kind of poisonous insects and snakes are in that area, what kind of dangerous sea life, and what to expect of the ocean there.

I was caught off guard when my daughter nearly stepped on a scorpion in Branson MO in 2011 because I didn't realize they lived in southwest MO.

It isn't that Disney never pays or always wins when sued because they choose to settle many of the lawsuits without going to trial. The cases they choose to take to trial are cases they know they will win. It is a PR move/strategy and makes people assume they are never at fault because they won those cases.

Imo, this one will not go to trial either. They will offer this family a tremendous amount of money to settle out of court and at some point the family may agree to the payout amount. Disney does not want this one to go to trial due to the severity of loss and how it happened. They will want to make this go away as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, the Judge is right about Lane being too young when killed to receive a huge amount for his death if the parents sued in his behalf. BUT the Judge also said Lane's parents and even their four year old who saw this happening has an excellent case for a huge monetary payout.

Disney knew the gators were in that lagoon. It is obvious that someone there dropped the ball and weren't removing all of the alligators 4 feet and longer. The five they found had to be at least four feet or longer because the DNR killed those gators expecting to find Lane's remains.

But no amount of money will ever replace the anguish of losing a precious child. However; a lawsuit sometimes can bring about changes to protect others in the future if its recommended that alligator signs need to be posted in areas where alligators can roam free. Alligators don't just attack in the water. They can attack on land as well.

IMO

I read that Disney checked the water for alligators and relocated them if they were longer than 4 feet. Can someone explain why that length is the cutoff? Are they too small to do severe damage if they're less than 4 feet long? Obviously I don't know much about alligators. But I also wonder why not relocate all of them, because eventually they'll all get to be longer than 4 feet, right?

I just don't think anyone is at fault. If I have a bbq and a wild animal attacks someone on my property is it my fault?

You are right. A gator less than 4 feet isn't big enough to be able to do what this gator did yesterday. You pose a good question. They are certainly easier to catch when small to relocate. The gator population in Florida is in the millions now.

It may be that smaller ones are very hard to see but I really don't know.
