Child was playing in the water even though signs say no swimming.

Child was playing in the water about a foot in. Gator attacked. Father struggled with the gator to get the child but was unsuccessful.
I heard the sheriff say the father did try to get the boy from the beginning alligators mouth.
I hate to ask but would an alligator actually leave anything behind to find?

I wonder if there were witnesses to this. NOT that I'm questioning the parents or reports, just curious if anyone saw something that could help.

The parents were relaxing on the beach and child was playing in water by himself when gator grabbed him.

I'm confused. The reporter tweeted no one saw it happen in the water. ??It was just stated during the press conference there were multiple witnesses.
