Child was playing in the water about a foot in. Gator attacked. Father struggled with the gator to get the child but was unsuccessful.

I heard the sheriff say the father did try to get the boy from the beginning alligators mouth.

CNN Giving updates and this is total trauma. The parents are from Nebraska and have 3 children, Searching will continue according to the sheriff until they find the child 😭

I hate to ask but would an alligator actually leave anything behind to find?

I doubt it. I think the suspect gator has to be killed and stomach contents examined. ((Shudder))

I wonder if there were witnesses to this. NOT that I'm questioning the parents or reports, just curious if anyone saw something that could help.

It was just stated during the press conference there were multiple witnesses.

I thought at the press conference they said the child was playing next to the dad.

I can't imagine. Gators are unbelievably fast and very hard to see at night. DH and I didn't even notice one until we saw a duck take flight off of our pier and was suddenly pulled into the water. It happened so fast. The ducks will usually make a running start and it was grabbed by a leg and under in one moment. People from out of state are not aware of the dangers and it's hard to fathom. Gators don't usually like people but night is feeding time. This is so tragic. I will be interested to see what Disney's policies are re: gators. But if there's no fence and there's water, one will find it. They are known to travel fair distances also so we don't know how long a gator has been there.

I'm sure the parents will be called every name in the book, but I can't feel anything but sympathy for them. I know I certainly would not have expected alligators at Disney. Florida or not. What a nightmare.

Playing in the water's edge/wading in the water a foot/12 inches from the beach -- not even remotely close to swimming.

Read the Guardian article just linked. The reported tweeted that before the press conference, so the presser has the most up-to-date info on that.
