I wonder if this could be Martha? The height is almost exact (Martha was 4’5” and the bone is believed to be 4’6”). I know distance is decently far but still. The age range is off but this Jane Doe was compared to Maribel Oquendo-Carrero who was younger than Martha.

I find it possible. I doubt they can get an accurate age from just a femur, only estimates. Also, based on Maribel's exclusion, it seems like younger girls are on the table. I also think this because Maribel is the ONLY exclusion. For this, I put it as possible but I'm not sure if I'm convinced it's her.

Of course. I myself have seen this Jane Doe many times as I routinely go through Florida Does for possible matches to Martha Jean and I also doubted it was her due to distance. I suspect or more so believe that Martha’s body is somewhere near her home, in St. Augustine/St. John’s County, or Jacksonville.

The height always catches my eye as most Jane Does found in Florida with heights are normally taller than Martha. I wanted to put the possibility on the table to just rule it out maybe. If Martha was abducted, the possibility she was removed from the area of Florida she lived in altogether isn’t foreign from the list of possibilities

Circumstances of Disappearance:
Martha was last seen walking west on Kerri-Lynn Road after 7:30 pm on November 27th 1985 in St. Augustine, Florida. She never returned home that night. Her family reported her missing at 3:00 am.

Additional Details:
Martha's family life was troubled, she had spent much of her life in different foster homes. Her brothers had also ran away previously from their home. Due to this, police speculated Martha also ran away from home to avoid her unstable family life. In 2009 Martha's brother confessed to accidentally killing her during an argument, then panicked and buried her in a 3-foot grave, at the old Florida Memorial College site near their home. Lambert led police to the site, but no remains were found. Police dug up the area and brought in dogs during an extensive search in September 2009, but they couldn’t find Martha’s remains. The overgrown, wooded property had been cleared of buildings in the years since her disappearance. Because authorities believe it was an accident, because Lambert was 15 at the time and because manslaughter charges had a statute of limitations in 1985, he will not be charged. Martha’s mother does not believe his confession and instead believes her daughter was abducted.

There's a Jane Doe near me that looks so similar to her, but the case near me doesn't fit the time line I don't think. With the different confessions, I don't even know what to think or how likely it would be that her brother didn't do it at this point. Hoping for answers in this case, but I'm struggling to find any details on dental work she may have had?

At this point, I believe Martha very well might be a still-missing victim of killer William Darrell Lindsey. Obviously to most of you, that’ll seem like a stretch since most of his victims were older women but when you think about the reasons I’m about to provide, you’ll hopefully understand why I believe this:

1.) Lindsey was active as Martha vanished after he killed Lisa Foley in St. Augustine in 1983

2.) Lindsey was known to kill in that specific area of St. Augustine. Martha vanished about two-five minutes away from where some of his victims were taken from

3.) He was known to take victims that always had some sad story to tell. With Martha, she would’ve had books upon books about her struggles dealing with a chaotic family and child abuse. He seemed to pick victims no one would really care about or look for at that time. Martha wasn’t the golden child of America like Etan Patz and rarely got any attention at all. I’ve read that cursory searches took place two days after she disappeared

4.) Martha was wearing a matching two piece bathing suit when she vanished and if he saw this, he might’ve simply assumed she was just another cocaine-addicted prostitute and picked her up not realizing she’s a child.

I believe based on Lindsey’s known habit of throwing his victims into water holes and borrow ponds that Martha is in a body of water near her residence in 1985. Obviously one might wonder why Lindsey didn’t just confess to Martha’s murder in 1997 when he was confessing. I believe this is attributed to him not wanting to be known for this one crime. She was an innocent twelve year old and he might’ve felt guilty enough to keep it secret.
Yes, that was his killing area. I believe it was either Lindsey or a family member. I was local at the time, and this case didn't get a huge amount of attention,IIRC.

Thank you for sharing. It’s sad that Martha’s case didn’t get any attention back when it happened. I’ve come to believe someone she knew was involved, likely a family member or someone living in her house.

In my years of researching Martha Lambert’s mysterious disappearance, I’ve come up with four potential explanations. Some based on my own observations and others based on witnesses who knew the Lamberts back in the day:

1.) Martha was killed by someone close to her, whether it was a family member or not remains to be seen:

-Her family didn’t have a good reputation in the area, both of her parents struggled with alcoholism and the home life was unstable. There were rumors of sexual abuse in the Lambert household but since I can’t confirm these rumors, I will not say whether I believe them to be true or not. Perhaps something happened to Martha in her home and her family conspired to cover it up by hiding her body before filing the missing persons report.

-Martha’s brothers both acted strangely after she disappeared. Neither of their whereabouts can be confirmed for that night. The mother said Raymond was at church but I’ve gotten confirmation that he was not there from kids (now adults) who attended the same church that night. David said he was at home but no one can confirm or deny this. I’ve theorized that one or both of them could be behind this and they hid her body in the area before the searches began. Maybe David’s confession to her accidental death was the truth and her remains weren’t found. Only problem is that the abandoned college campus was searched for her with nothing being found. Also, police would gather there to do target practice and file paper work together, none of them saw anything to indicate her body was there. Teenagers, kids, and homeless people also frequented the abandoned campus but none reported seeing anything out of the ordinary there.

-Martha had an elderly neighbor, Clifford Morgan, whose trailer she visited numerous times before she went missing. He had a reputation for having kids around his home. Morgan was killed in a home invasion of his trailer in January 1986 so LE couldn’t question him about the case. Martha met him when her parents had a yard sale at some point prior to her disappearance.

2.) Martha was abducted by an unknown individual:

-There’s mention of a green van that was seen driving in the neighborhood on the night of November 27th 1985. The two men driving have never been identified and the van was not located.

-Her brother David also mentioned in one of his earlier statements that he saw Martha get into a black car with someone.

3.) Martha was the victim of a serial killer:

-Two years before Martha disappeared, another twelve year old girl named Sherry Sheperd went missing from St. John’s County. She left her house in Hastings to go for a swim on August 2nd 1983 and never returned. A few years later, her skeletal remains were found buried in a shallow grave. She was murdered and her case is unsolved though very little information exists about it. Due to the similarities, I’ve wondered if Sherry and Martha were killed by the same person.

-William Darrell Lindsay was in the area when she disappeared and Kerri-Lynn Road was in his stomping grounds. Only issue with him is that he seemed to prefer older women engaged in prostitution as his victims. Martha was quite small in stature so I can’t imagine him mistaking her for being older than her actual age. Some detectives I’ve spoken to have said they do believe it’s possible Lindsay took Martha and that he kept the information to himself so he wouldn’t be known as a child predator in prison.

-James Kenneth Elmen Jr. has been on my radar for quite some years now. He murdered Julie Stoverink Estes in Jacksonville on November 17th, ten days before Martha’s disappearance. Julie was abducted by him from a Lil Champs store in Jacksonville. Martha and her brothers frequented the Lil Champs store that was located not far from her Kerri Lynn Road residence. I’ve speculated maybe Elmen planned to rob the store like he did with Julie and kidnap the clerk there but spotted Martha instead before taking her. He’s also suspected in the death of his ten year old half sister, Dana Loomis. She disappeared on October 22nd 1985 from her home in Jacksonville and was found murdered a few hours later in the woods just a couple hundred yards from where she lived. He’s the prime suspect in the death of fifteen year old Kristina Casey who went missing in Jacksonville on April 20th 1985. Her skeletal remains were found nearly a year later in a wooded area. He was arrested for kidnapping as well as attempted kidnapping in 1986 and has been in prison ever since. He’s one of my main suspects in this case.

4.) Martha ran away from home and doesn’t want to be found:

-Martha’s home life was chaotic and unstable. She was described by everyone who knew her as the only normal one amongst her family. Most people believed she took off to start a new life away from her crazy family. She was self sufficient and knew how to cook and take care of herself since none of the adults around her could. Her former foster family remembers she was sweet and caring but shy.

-Shortly after her disappearance, Martha’s mom got a phone call from a young girl who said “Mom, I’m okay” before hanging up. Her mom didn’t believe it was Martha on the other end but part of me wonders if it indeed was her and she was saying goodbye for good. No one could confirm if the unidentified girl was Martha or not.

Bumping up for Martha. In my opinion, those in her closer circle, not a stranger, are more likely involved. Whether someone whose behavior was inappropriate (such as an older male neighbor inviting children around), someone whose story changed, or someone who seemed to be covering for someone .

She was a precious girl (she reminds me of a dear child I know) and deserved to be safe and live her full life. I don't think she ran away, with all of the other suspicious aspects of the case.

I used to think it could’ve been a stranger abduction but I too believe it was someone close to her.

There was so much going on around Martha in 1985 and at least two known serial killers were active in that general area during the 1980s. It also seemed like the police never wanted to focus on any other possibility aside from the family being involved so I’ve been concerned the SJSO had a problem with tunnel vision back then.

The Lambert kids were all abused, neglected and treated horribly by the adults in their lives. That’s why I was always confused on how the cops knew David was lying to cover himself rather than just being terrified. I will get back to why I believe David never stuck to more than one story and lied.

My list of suspects has never really changed, it’s from years of gathering information from people who knew the Lamberts back then. I don’t share all of it to protect those who have come forward.

The list currently includes:

1.) David Lambert (brother)
2.) Raymond Lambert (brother)
3.) Howard Lambert (father or stepfather, unclear if Martha shares the same father as either of her brothers)
4.) Clifford Morgan (neighbor)
5.) James Kenneth Elmen Jr. (suspected serial killer)
6.) Darrell Lindsay (serial killer)

Martha was pretty much the only “normal” one in her family. Her parents were both alcoholics who fought and the children were often left to their own devices. If anyone cooked in that house, it was Martha. Those who knew her at school said she was very friendly but also quite shy.

A girl whose grandparents fostered Martha remembers playing with her when they had her at their home. She was sweet and just wanted love.

Martha definitely wasn’t lured or coaxed into a strangers car. Martha never accepted rides from anyone, not even people she knew. Someone I spoke with recalled seeing Martha walking alone on a street on one occasion and offered her a ride to her destination but she declined.

If she was kidnapped, it was by force and Martha would’ve put up a struggle with her abductor because she was known to scrap with people who gave her a hard time. By all accounts, no one heard any screams or sounds consistent with a struggle that night. It’s obviously possible she was taken at gun or knife point which might’ve scared her into complying but we can’t prove that obviously.

Now, back to why I believe David lied. I think David lied to cover not for himself but for someone else. David was know to be very impressionable and prone to suggestion. That’s why many people who knew him personally suspect he was put up to confessing to her death by someone else. That someone else I believe was another family member.

Some have said they suspect the mother due to her temper and alcoholism. While I could see that, I don’t think she was involved. If anything, I think Martha’s disappearance was a wake up call that caused her to see that her bad parenting and neglect ultimately led to the demise of her youngest child.

The drinking only increased after Martha’s disappearance, eventually culminating in Howard and Margaret’s divorce. In 1990, Margaret moved to Danville, Illinois and left her sons with Howard.

I cannot find any clarification on whether or not Howard is Martha’s biological father. No one really seems to know to be honest. It’s also unclear whether or not Martha and her brothers are half siblings. I can’t really find much on Martha’s actual birth and her family’s origins. All anyone can say is the Lambeet family was well known in St. Augustine and not for good reasons.

There’s been rumors and allegations that sexual abuse was occurring in the Lambert household. Some who knew the family believe Martha might’ve threatened to tell on someone and so she was killed to prevent that. A man who was a child and neighbor to the Lambert’s recalled seeing one of the brothers throwing pillow cases and sacks with unknown contents into a pond nearby. When questioned, the brother said it was dead animal parts.

Should be noted that for whatever reason, the Lambert’s had a bunch of dead dogs behind their property that were found when the police searched the area. The neighbor believes the contents of those sacks might’ve been Martha’s remains. The pond is gator infested so whatever was thrown it was undoubtedly consumed by them.

I’ve gotten mixed answers on whether this pond was ever searched or not. I was told at one point that it wasn’t, that they weren’t sure and then that they did search it at some point in 1986 only to find nothing. I’m not sure what to believe from the SJSO anymore and I take what they say with a grain of salt.

The general theory that locals hold is that someone who lived in Martha’s house killed her and then one or both of her brothers helped to dispose of her remains. This is all of course just speculation until proven.

The area where Martha disappeared has a lot of random spots and holes that could hide a body. I’m hopeful that someday, someone will find her accidentally or someone will finally reveal what happened to her. My gut tells me Martha isn’t very far from the spot her mobile home once stood 40 years ago.

Again, all of this is speculation and rumors that have floated around locals ever since 1985. Most of the people I spoke with were former neighbors of the Lamberts, former classmates of the three children, former law enforcement officers, as well as people might not have known the family but recall the events that came before and after Martha’s disappearance. If this is not allowed, mods by all means can remove.
