Why would they show up with a picture of Omar? How would they know Omar was the supposed suspicious person when this was originally reported?

If I would have been an agent and knowing what I posted in post #373 I would have brought it to my bosses/superiors attention. jmo

Photo lineup.

The store reports seeing a suspicious person in a store without giving out a name. At that time FBI had no way of knowing who that was. How would they even know to put Omar in a photo line up? And basically, suspicious person was suspicious because they talked in a foreign language over the phone. That seems to be unlikely to get FBI interested in investigating further.

Trying to buy 500 rounds of ammo AND a bullet proof vest together at a local store would seem like purchases for a specific task, which would raise suspicion. Plus the fact he probably didn't know a whole lot about those items makes it even more suspicious.

Plus specialty gun shops aren't like Walmart. There is a lot of advice and education provided, they typically focus on selling the firearms along with a certain amount of limited "popular" accessories. Figuring out the skill level and needs of the buyer is usually a basic part of their sales so they would notice suspicious buying behavior.

What exactly do people buy at their local gun store? And why wouldn't he know anything about these items? He worked security jobs. He was an expert marksman and got high marks for marksmanship. So why wouldn't he know about ammo or bullet proof vests?

He spoke arabic after he was told they did not have the level 3 bullet proof vest he wanted, then walked back and wanted bulk ammo (1000) rounds. I can not imagine being in a gun store and hearing a middle eastern man asking for a bullet proof vest get denied then make a call speaking in arabic then ask for 1000 rounds of 223 ammo and not bat an eye. jmo I would be in the parking lot writing down a tag #.jmo idk

Mateen came into the shop alone and asked for a “Level 3” bulletproof vest and then walked away for a second, speaking in Arabic on his cell phone, the store’s owner said.

When he came back, Mateen told the employee he also wanted bulk ammo, which usually comes in 1,000 rounds.

What exactly do people buy at their local gun store?

Most people go to purchase a firearm. They want to hold and handle them when making their selection which is where local shops have the advantage over internet sales.

Accessories and the like for those new firearm purchases are the second category of products (other than ammo). Things like holsters or lasers or mag loaders, things a new gun buyer would want for their new purchase before they leave the store.

They typically don't carry a massive amount of specialty products simply because those won't sell fast, if at all, most folks will buy aftermarket accessories online for the guns they already own.

Someone working security could be legitimately interested in a bullet proof vest. I am still not convinced this person was even OM, since the store didn't ask for a name and there either was no surveillance video (or it was "grainy." Here it says video was of no use because it was grainy.
"But the investigation apparently didn't go too far since no one knew the man's name, license plate number or any other identifying characteristic. Abell said the security camera footage was too "grainy" to be helpful."

A photo lineup of individuals that the FBI investigated that matched the suspects description could have been shown to the store employee. An identification could have come from that. JMO

Or requested a copy of the store video. Stores often only keep it for 3-4 weeks before it gets erased.

Though if they really didn't have a name there wasn't much they could do. I will assume if the store DID give them a name they will make sure that comes out.

Apparently the video was too "grainy" to be helpful.

FBI apparently has investigated thousands of people. That would be one long photo line up.

Lots of people buy the vests. They are very popular among "prepper" types. Thing is normal people (especially those texting on cell phones) typically do a fair amount of research before purchasing one and this guy seemed fairly clueless, that and a request for bulk ammo would seem very odd.

One would think since he had worked in security for so long he would already know where to buy vests and the like, or at least know to call ahead and find out who carries them, but he didn't. I have been to enough local gun stores to know that they don't typically carry vests, but he didn't know that because he doesn't have much experience.

There's thousands of potential terrorist's that look like this killer in Florida? That's a scary thought. It's also a reason why the FBI needs to do a better job in cases like this. JMO

Well, exactly. Why wouldn't OM know anything about bullet proof vest. This person might have not even been him.

CBS News: Omar Mateen Enrolled In Online Website For Islam Lessons Run By Anti-Gay Imam

The Orlando nightclub gunman enrolled in an online website for lessons on Islam that was run by an imam who openly preached against the gay community, sources said.

The source explained to CBS News it was operated by Abu Taubah, also known as Marcos Robertson, an imam who preached anti-gay rhetoric.

The FBI maybe should have asked a news place to put the video on the 6:00 news and ask anyone if they know this person in the video.

It seemed like a very credible and important tip if the store called the FBI about it and that guy raised suspicions based on his behavior in the store. Asking for a level 3 bullet proof vest would be very uncommon and almost unheard of for a local gun shop owner.

I am pretty sure that owner never had someone come in his store asking for that.
It sounds like the store owner saw him get on his phone talking to someone else during the attempted purchase.
That right there is very suspicious because it probably seemed like the guy was buying a gun for someone else who maybe didn't qualify.

It sounds like he raised all kinds of suspicions.
Its too bad the store owner didn't manage to get a license plate. Its also too bad the store owner didn't call 911 while he was in store and try to delay guy in the store until LE could come and check him out.

Hindsight is 20-20 and in this case it turned out to be a real threat.

I do give the store owner who called in the tip huge credit for trying though. He did try.

This has been reported early on.

"The gunman who murdered at least 50 people in a Florida nightclub early Sunday morning was a follower of a controversial gang leader-turned-bank robber who was released from prison last year despite warnings from prosecutors that he would recruit people to carry out violent acts, sources told FoxNews.com."

That's what they think. But eye witnesses are frequently wrong, and video is too grainy to be useful.
