Pulse gunman's wife: I knew he was going to Orlando to attack

Christal HayesUpdated 4:09 p.m. ET Jan. 5, 2018
Police bodycam footage of the Pulse nightclub mass shooting last year shows officers tell the shooter to 'come out with your hands up or you will die.' An officer can also be heard uttering a prayer.

A handwritten statement given to the FBI by the wife of Pulse nightclub gunman Omar Mateen says she saw him prepare for the deadly attack for months and knew that the LGBT nightclub was his target.

The 12-page statement, quietly released by federal authorities at the end of December in a batch of records in the case, was taken hours after the June 12, 2016 shooting. The attack left 49 dead and dozens of others injured. Noor Salman was questioned for hours, without a lawyer, after authorities learned her husband was the gunman behind the attack.

Video of Pulse shooting released in Noor Salman hearing

The video evidence is being held at federal court in Orlando. In the videos released Tuesday, you can hear law enforcement tell each other, "He just told them there's an explosive device in the car." When talking about the victims, officers are heard saying, "We want to make sure no one's coming out with a bomb on them."

Judge Paul Byron has not made a decision on this evidence but will have to before Salman's upcoming March trial date.

Noor Salman trial: What to expect in federal case against Pulse gunman's wife

"ORLANDO, Fla. - One month from Thursday, the federal trial for the Pulse gunman’s wife will begin in Orlando’s federal courthouse. Leading up to the prosecution of Noor Salman, U.S. attorneys have released evidence showing what they say Salman knew about her husband’s plans to attack the gay nightclub.

Salman faces charges of aiding and abetting the provision of material to support a foreign terrorist organization and obstruction of justice. She was arrested seven months after police say her husband killed 49 people and injured more than 50 others before police shot and killed him June 12, 2016.

The trial is scheduled to begin March 1 at the U.S. District Court in Orlando. Looking at the month ahead, here’s what to know before the week-long trial..."

Hearing held for Pulse gunman's widow, Noor Salman
Jury selection scheduled to start on Thursday

"...Salman was in court, but the public was not allowed in. The closed-door sealed hearing was to discuss some last-minute evidence that could be admitted into trial.

This comes after Judge Paul G. Bryon issued some rulings in the case this week, including what evidence the jury will and won't be able to see.

Some of those rulings were allowing text messages sent between Mateen and Salman during the morning of Pulse attack.

Also, video of Mateen firing shots inside the club will be allowed. However, video and images of officers pulling victims' bodies out will not be allowed..."

Orlando Massacre: These Are the People Who Were Killed at Pulse Nightclub

"They were a cross-section of Americans living it up at an Orlando club — professionals who plied their trades in the city's gleaming towers, 20-somethings who worked in nearby amusement parks. They were tourists passing through town and regulars greeting old friends.

Then, suddenly, gunfire ripped through the gay nightclub and turned them into something else — victims of the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.

Here are their stories..."

Who is Noor Salman, widow of Pulse gunman Omar Mateen?

"ORLANDO, Fla. - Prosecutors paint her as an accomplice to one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history, but Noor Salman's attorneys claim she didn't know the terror her husband, Oman Mateen, planned to unleash at Pulse nightclub.

"I was unaware of everything," Salman told The New York Times in a November, 2016 article.

Most of what is commonly known about Salman’s personal life and her marriage to Mateen is from that November 2016 New York Times interview, her first and only interview before or after her arrest...."

Noor Salman's 'signed confession' makes defense difficult, legal experts say
'He was going to Orlando to attack the Pulse nightclub,' Salman tells FBI agents

"ORLANDO, Fla. - Noor Salman confessed to knowing her husband's plans to open fire on a gay nightclub in Orlando, according to a 12-page statement in her own words that was written down by an FBI agent on June 12, 2016.

The alleged confession happened hours after her husband, Omar Mateen, killed 49 people and injured 53 others in a mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in south downtown Orlando....

n December, Salman's attorneys tried to convince a judge that the statements she made to investigators on June 12, 2016, were obtained unlawfully. Federal prosecutors said authorities were not required to read Salman her Miranda rights because she was not officially in custody or detained, meaning she was free to go if she chose to do so.

In a January pre-trial hearing, News 6 learned the defense is going back to that argument by bringing in Dr. Bruce Frumkin to testify on Salman's behalf. According to his website, he's a Miami-based forensic psychologist who specializes in false confessions..."

Pulse shooting trial: Noor Salman jury instructions (with clip)

"...Fifty-seven pages of jury instructions were released last week; although the instructions not final, they give an idea of what prosecutors have to prove against Salman.

“What the government will show is that Omar Mateen provided material support to a terrorist organization and that his wife, in some aspect, helped him accomplish that goal,” WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said.

Sheaffer said that without Mateen’s proven terrorism, the case falls flat.

“It’s not going to be enough to show that Noor Salman knew her husband was going to commit a terrorist act. She will have to do something, no matter how slight, to aid him in accomplishing that act,” Sheaffer said..."

Paul Terrell Henry: 'A loving spirit'

June 24 2016

"Francisco Hernandez plans to go back to school.

That's what his boyfriend, Paul Terrell Henry, would have wanted. Henry, 41, was among the victims of the Pulse nightclub tragedy on June 12.

"He knew I had the potential for greater things,'' a heartbroken Hernandez said. "I had three years of college but didn't finish. He wanted the best for me, to succeed and to help me make something of myself.

"I am definitely going to do that for him. I am going to make something of myself.''

Hernandez said Henry, a St. Petersburg native, loved to dance and have fun. Henry enjoyed spending time at the Bear Den at Parliament House and excelled at pool.

He loved his family, including two children. His daughter, Alexia, recently graduated high school. He also had a son.,,,"

Per Orlando WESH TV News at Noon- 3 jurors have been chosen thus far in jury selection.

Thanks for posting that psychological evaluation letter YesorNo. I had been thinking I remembered reading that this shooter had a history of domestic violence, and I was wondering how that would play in this trial.

Since this is a federal trial, no cameras are allowed in the courtroom. So an artist is capturing the proceedings instead.

Trial opens for widow of Pulse nightclub shooter as jury selection begins (with clip)

"...Selecting a fair jury

Defense attorneys and prosecutors are considering prospective jurors from a pool of 600 people. Jury selection is expected to take between seven and 10 days.

Putting together an impartial jury will be a difficult task, especially because the trial is being held in downtown Orlando at the Middle District of Florida courthouse, about 2 miles from where the massacre took place.

Six of the 10 prospective jurors questioned on Thursday progressed to the final jury pool.

Four were dismissed for a variety of reasons. One was a mother on maternity leave who lives two blocks from the Pulse nightclub, while another was a man who grew up near Pulse and said his professional responsibilities would make it difficult to give his full attention to the trial, which the judge and prosecutors have estimated could take four to five weeks.

Another woman was excused in the afternoon after she expressed a distaste for guns and people who shoot for sport at gun ranges.

Orlando attorney and former CNN legal analyst Mark O'Mara said there are several factors that will make the jury selection challenging.

"It is going to be amazingly difficult to seat a jury in this case because not only do the potential jurors live in central Florida, but we have had an enormous backlash against terrorist acts in the past 17 years since 2001, and this case, like the Boston Marathon case, will be felt as an opportunity to right those wrongs," O'Mara said..."
