DNA would be helpful but it looks like they’d have to exhume him, if he wasn’t cremated. I wonder if there’s any usable DNA on his clothing.

This could explain his palms.

Dupuytren’s contracture is an abnormal thickening of the tissue just beneath the skin. This thickening occurs in the palm and can extend into the fingers. Firm pits, bumps and cords (thick lines) can develop and cause the fingers to bend into the palm (Figures 1 and 2). This condition may also be known as Dupuytren’s Disease.

The cause of Dupuytren’s contracture is unknown. The problem is more common in men, people over age 40 and people of Northern European descent.

Yes, he was sooo thin! Even the composite makes his face look very gaunt.

I think that with such a short PMI that Dupuytren's contracture would have been noted on autopsy (nodules, thickened ligaments, banding of tissue, the actual bent appearance of fingers) as opposed to simple thickening of the skin on the palms. It's an interesting idea, though. I had just assumed that he had worked in some kind of manual labor but with minimal info on the autopsy report there's no reason to believe it couldn't have been Dupuytren's. It looks like it occurs bilaterally in about 50% of people.

I was thinking calluses when I first read it, and of course how very thin he was. But his face looks very familiar. I’m thinking he’d be recognizable if the right person saw the reconstruction.

Here’s an interesting tidbit on thick skin on the palms of hands. He could have been homeless and hungry for a long period of time. The brain needs fuel to perform and perhaps he was so malnourished he was disoriented.

Palmoplantar keratoderma (PPK) can be either acquired during the lifetime (more commonly) or inherited. Acquired PPK may arise due to changes in a person's health or environment.

Distinguishing between acquired and hereditary PPK is important. Acquired PPK usually occurs later in life and may be due to many causes, such as drugs, malnutrition, chemicals, systemic disease, cancer, and infection.
