Miami, Florida (CNN) -- A 15-year-old boy who was burned over 65 percent of his body in October, allegedly by a group of teenagers he knew, has been readmitted to a Miami hospital after he had trouble breathing, a hospital spokeswoman said Monday.
Michael Brewer "had complications with his breathing and is now back in the ICU," said Lorraine Nelson, spokeswoman for Jackson Memorial Hospital. Brewer was admitted to Jackson Memorial's Holtz Children's Hospital on Sunday night and is in serious condition, she said.

Michael Brewer returns to hospital

Days after his release from a Miami hospital, the Deerfield Beach teen doused with rubbing alcohol and set on fire in October is back in intensive care with respiratory problems that flared up during the holidays.

Michael Brewer, 15, was admitted into Holtz Children's Hospital on Sunday and was listed in serious condition in its pediatric intensive care unit, Jackson Health System spokeswoman Lorraine Nelson said Monday.

"All his doctor will allow us to say is that Michael was readmitted to the hospital due to respiratory complications," Nelson said.

Family representatives said the boy's asthma and the severe change in weather may have contributed to his relapse.

Brewer's parents could not be reached for comment.

The teen's Facebook page, dubbed "Pray for Michael Brewer," lit up Monday with messages from well-wishers and news of his return to the hospital.

A family representative, Gary V. Fuller, said on Facebook that the teen took ill after New Year's Eve.

"Mikey has had respiratory distress the last few days due to his asthma, the change in temperatures in South Florida, and the multiple intubations that he had to endure due to his skin graft surgeries.

Jan. 7 SunSentinel Michael Released After Second Stint in Hospital

MIAMI - Burn survivor Michael Brewer was released from a second stint at Jackson Memorial Hospital on Thursday after undergoing surgery to clear his airways, family and hospital officials said.

Doctors were able to remove scar tissue from previous intubations that had blocked about 40 percent of Brewer's airways, Valerie Brewer wrote on the Pray for Michael Brewer Facebook page.

Brewer was readmitted to the hospital on Sunday after experiencing respiratory problems over the holidays.

Gary Fuller, a supporter from Virginia who befriended the Brewers after hearing and reading about the family's situation, announced a fundraising campaign approved by the family aimed at raising $50,000 to furnish a new home.

While out of the hospital, Michael Brewer has not returned to his family's home in Deerfield Beach, less than a mile from the apartment complex where as many as nine teenagers surrounded him last Oct. 12.

Jan. 8 SunSentinel Campaign to Raise Money For Burn Survivor's Furniture Called Off

An effort to raise money to furnish a new home for burn survivor Michael Brewer was abruptly canceled Friday, less than a day after it was first announced.

Family friend Gary Fuller, who announced the fundraising campaign on Brewer's Facebook page "Pray for Michael Brewer" on Thursday, wrote to the teenager's supporters in the same space Friday to call off the effort.

"I want to make it clear that my recent posted requests for members of this group to contribute to neighbors4neighbors.org for the Brewer family for furniture was not requested in any way by the Brewers, but was my own initiative," he wrote. "I do urge you to continue to donate to Michael's cause."

Brewer, 15, was released Thursday from Jackson Memorial Medical Center after spending four days being treated for respiratory problems that flared up over the holidays. He had previously been hospitalized for two months after a group of peers surrounded him and, according to prosecutors, purposely lit him on fire.

Family members have told supporters that Brewer has no desire to return to his former home in Deerfield Beach, a home shared by his parents, a grandmother, Brewer's sister and her children. The suspects accused of attacking Brewer all live in walking distance of the house.

"There's no way he could possibly go back to that place," said Lynne Cameron, executive director of Neighbors 4 Neighbors. "It's a fearful place."

Cameron, who oversees the Family Fund for Michael Brewer for the nonprofit group, said the boy's family has been looking for a house to buy, but that it's too soon to be asking for help with furnishings...

I wonder where he is staying. I hope his parents are able to be with him, wherever he is; he truly needs the family support right now. How terrible not to even be able to go back to his own home. They should evict all the other families from my point of view; though even that wouldn't make him truly safe from people like that.

This story was almost more than I could bear. Michael and his family are in my prayers.

Thanks for the updates Kiki

as you all can see...in South Florida the fundraising is done by the media orgs...
cause we have simply had too many crazy cases (like the Bush lady and her daughter,
the mother had Munchausen by Proxy....that was a huge bust)

maybe the neighbors for neighbors did not want to "furnish" a house for 50k>>>? that sounds odd...the money raised by them is supposed to be for Michael's care..which will be a lifetime of care really

Maybe he is staying with family in other part of the state or maybe they have rented a house somewhere outside of Deerfield Beach or ?? They must be fairly near to the Burn Center IMHO

This is such a horrible and ongoing story...Michael really seems to be a fighter :)
