Deputies arrested Jasmin Kennedy, 37, earlier this morning after her 13-year-old son was found dead in a St. Cloud home.

A family member living at a residence on Crosley Avenue called 911 for help around 7:30 a.m.

When first responders arrived, Lopez said they found a boy face up on a bed. A short time later, he was pronounced dead.

The sheriff said markings on the boy appeared consistent with that of someone who had been strangled.

Kennedy “spontaneously stated that she killed her son” to medics at the scene, Lopez explained.

“According to our deputies, she had been choking him on the bed,” he added.

He said Kennedy lived in the home along with her grandmother, her grandmother’s boyfriend, her 13-year-old son who died and Kennedy’s other child, who is 5 years old. The younger child was uninjured.

According to deputies, Kennedy is cooperating with the investigation, but it is ongoing.

Kennedy was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery by strangulation, child neglect and aggravated child abuse, but could she could face additional charges after the medical examiner's office confirms the cause of death. Detectives did not provide details on the potential motive and are continuing to investigate the incident.

Kennedy was living at the St. Cloud home with another one of her children, 5, the kids' grandmother, and the grandmother's boyfriend. Lopez said that police responded to a call at the house earlier this year, but did not elaborate on the details of the call.

"It's always a tragedy when someone so young is taken, regardless of how it's done, whether it's a car accident, or whether it's murder, whether it's an illness," Lopez said.
