From what I just heard on HLN the grown daughter (mother of the 6 yr old) also knew about the "family secret" because she, as well as Carmen, had told the granddaughter to keep it quiet. So she had to have known about the treatment of the twins. That makes sense as she was having to pick up the granddaughter from that house - HOW could you go in that house and NOT know?

My heart aches for him so bad.

I'm guessing the granddaughter's need for therapy was about more than just her parent's divorce. :(

Last I heard they are cautiously optimistic. When he's awake they say he's interacting with the doctors and moving around a little - but he's not out of bed. The big whigs from DCF just keep visiting him. Big deal.

The reporter on JVM brought up a good point. Who is going to get Nubia's remains? She deserves a proper burial. I'm hoping that the bio Aunt and Uncle from Texas will take caer of her properly. If I see anything about it, I'll post it.

Notice that it also says the BOTH Jorge and Carmen were this woman's parents. I'm wondering how much this grown daughter knew? Also, if she was abused by these two as a child.

I am going to guess this is incorrect regarding both of them being the parents of Jennifer. Jorge and Carmen married in 1996. Obviously the daughter (Jennifer) would have been born long before the two of them married. Other articles referred to Jennifer as Carmen's daughter.

yea I've seen and heard both. Just because they got married in '96 doesn't mean they weren't together for years. Even so - 1996 is 14 years ago so this daughter knew him well even iffen he wasn't daddy. I have friends that were together for over 15 years and 4 kids - they finally married and the marriage didn't last 3 years. So go figger.

I just read earlier that the daughter's ex-husband was the one that requested the therapist for the granddaughter as he had seen some 'red flags'. It must be pretty bad if they are vigoriously moving forward to terminate her (the mother) parental rights. It also said that the mother hindered DCF and LE's attempts to talk to the granddaughter - so much so that the little girl would cry.

Yea, but I have seen a number of articles that say Jennifer is the daughter of Carmen. If she was the child of the both of them, why would the articles say that she is Carmen's daughter? It appears the two of them started fostering/adopting children after they got married in 1996 ( I mean, we have not heard anything about them fostering/adopting before that), so I doubt they were together for a long time prior to marriage.

A chemical was also poured on the girl, Nubia, and it was difficult to determine if she had been abused before her death, according to officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the case publicly. It's not clear if the chemical was poured on the girl before or after she died.

Jorge Barahona admitted to starving his daughter, according to officials. It's unclear how the little girl died or how long she had been missing.

An autopsy was completed, but authorities said Friday it wouldn't be released for several days.

A public defender for Barahona, James Snowden, declined comment. Attorney Richard Joyce declined to comment on Carmen Barahonas's case in an e-mail Friday.

In lengthy, single-spaced letters to Gov. Charlie Crist, Jorge and Carmen Barahona in 2007 portrayed themselves as loving and misunderstood parents, suggested they were victims of little more than a witch hunt by a guardian ad litem for their twins and pleaded for intervention from Tallahassee.

"If we have done anything wrong then let us be held accountable for it, which we have not done anything to (these) children," the couple wrote in letters obtained by The Palm Beach Post. "Just give them all the Unconditional Love a father and mother have for them."

1 child dead and in the company of Jorge. 1 child covered in a chemical and injuries from that, as well as showing signs of old injuries. Apparently Jorge isn't telling what the unknown chemical is, even though that possibly could help in the treatment of the living child. Allegedly there is an admission that Jorge was starving the little girl.

According to an updated probable cause affidavit released today Barahona "stated he poured gasoline over his head while Victor slept with his head in [Barahona's] lap. Later in the interview, [Barahona] said he held Victor in his arms while he poured gasoline over his own head."

According to the affidavit, however, only Victor was injured.

"Upon comparing the injuries incurred by the defendant and the victim, it is evident the victim was not burned in the course of the defendant attempting to ignite himself. The defendant suffered no burns to his person while the victim incurred serious burns to his abdomen, buttock, and upper thighs," reads the document.

It's not clear whether the burns were from acid or from fire. The affidavit said the boy also suffered a fractured clavicle and a fractured arm. The investigation into the death of Victor's twin sister, Nubia, is ongoing.

Just a thought. Yes, I have thoughts sometimes.

Jorge hasn't been charged with Nubia's death as yet. There was a delay in removing Nubia's remains from the vehicle, reports of her remains being covered with a chemical. I am thinking that this is causing a delay in the autopsy report. Any soft tissue injuries she has received will have to be checked to determine if it was caused by the chemical or something else. The damage from the chemical could also potentially hide other injuries. So extra care will have to be taken in studying the injuries. Probably they will be doing a lot of microscopic studies, as well as chemical studies. And since at one point he said he gave the boy sleeping pills, then that means a drug screen will be important. Also if he was starving her, the coroner will have to be very careful to differentiate between the body's response to starving and the cause of death, because a starving death and a violent death while achieving the same results could result in different charges being filed. And to top it all off they will have to take care to protect the employees from the unknown chemical. So the fact that no murder charges have been filed as yet may be a good thing. It means they are being very very cautious and thorough on this one.

Now this just frosts my cookies!!! How dare that regional director woman say yesterday that she, personally, has gone through their file and there were nothing but STELLAR reports!!! WTH was she reading?

I guess Miami social workers are very gulliable and the Barahona's were quite the good liars!

It also says in that article that the courts are moving ahead to terminate the grown daughter's parental rights NEXT WEEK! Boy, now they sure can move fast - after the fact.

I stand corrected. At this link posted by mysteriew, they clearly state there was a 2nd report about abuse from Alessandra's mom as well.

I do think it had to be something pretty serious and definite for the judge to tell the mom not to even try to contact her daughter - period.

W.O.O. I don't think we are going to get a freaking thing from DCF! They are in CYA mode, like always! Just the very fact that the four children were adopted into this family and they had the nerve to cry foul when the guardian ad litem voiced serious concerns says so much! Ms Director obviously didn't read his reports either!

What does a guardian ad litem have to gain by addressing issues? IMO NOTHING except the safety of his/her clients, the CHILDREN! This story is despicable and it started long before Nubia and Victor went into that truck!

Jorge B's claims to have doused himself with gas, by holding a 5 gallon can over his head in the cab of that truck is about as ridiculous as his "suicide attempt" at the jail -

I do not understand why Carmen has not been arrested, she participated in these crimes and she impeded the investigation with her lies (at the very least). Jennifer should be called on the carpet too. Anyone who saw what these children went thru without trying to stop it needs a wake up call! If you're not part of the solution, you are part of the problem! Personally I believe if all Jennifer is guilty of is allowing her daughter to witness the abuse of these children and trying to keep her quiet about it - this is more than enough for her to lose custody of this little hero. Good job, Mr Perez!

I am relieved that The Court is taking a stand against these abusers! Altho a day late and a dollar short, maybe if any of these judges had been involved in the "family's" business sooner, this tragedy would have never happened.

It isn't just DCF. From the way that article is written, in the 16 times that police were called to the home, they infer that only two times were for sick or injured people. At least 2 were for assault. Reports aren't available, so no details are available. But it appears that the remainder of the time police didn't even bother to file a report. Reports seem useless if no other action is warranted, but they really aren't. They can help to establish a pattern, and be used as a guide for the later calls. Perhaps would have been useful in the 2 assualt calls, may have even provided evidence that would have led to an arrest.

This happens a lot in DV, police get a lot of calls to an address for DV they don't have enough evidence for an arrest or they don't feel like making an arrest and so they just try to separate the participants for the night and they leave. It solves the problem for the night, but allows the problem to remain. The next time LE is called, it is like the first time that LE has ever gotten a call to the home because there are no previous reports.

Had there been reports on file, the DCF, guardian ad litum or court may have had access to them. It could have affected the decisions made in the adoption. In Ohio they have made it a law that when considering foster care or adoption the workers have to check for any signs or incidents of DV and they have given them access to the reports.

What pops into my head every time I think about this case is that he was exterminating these babies.
I keep thinking that he did intend to kill himself after the children to protect his wife. I don't think Carmen was protecting him at all, I think it's possible she sent him off to kill himself and the surviving twin after Nubia's death.
I can't bring myself to call him their son or even refer to him using their last name.

Does anybody know if family court is usually open to the public like it has been in this case ?
If seems to me like they're putting on quite the show for the public.
They want all to see how hard they work to protect Florida's children.

"We don't work weekends." Or report crimes to the police for that matter.
