Doe Network has slightly more information about the location found:
www.doenetwork.org/cases/software/main.html?id=3026umfl
The dedecent's partial skeletal remains were located under pine needles 6.2 miles South of SR 40, and 200 yards West of Williamson Boulevard in a wooded area in rural Volusia County, Florida.

Preliminary information about family names and heritage 1982 Volusia County John Doe | Genealogy For Justice™
In early 2024, after sequencing his DNA, it was discovered that this 1982 Volusia John Doe’s ancestral ties are French Canadian, with deeper Irish (Canadian) influence in both his maternal and paternal ancestry. In addition to Ontario and Quebec, he has genetic ties to Massachusetts, Illinois, and Michigan.

His ancestors include the surnames LeFevre, LaPoint, Bellenoit, Brosseau, Lerat, and Desjardins. More DNA samples from people with similar backgrounds are being sought in order to restore his identity.

Genealogy For Justice have made an update, "In early 2024, after sequencing his DNA, it was discovered that most of this 1982 Volusia John Doe’s ancestral ties are French Canadian, with more than 50% of his admixture being Irish, Scottish, and English. In addition to Ontario and Quebec, he has genetic ties to distant matches Massachusetts, Illinois, and Michigan. His identified common ancestors are very distant (1750s). After 18 months of research and reference DNA testing we have found no closer common ancestors."

It's interesting to see which ancestral populations are underrepresented in the genetic genealogy database. However, I'm not surprised with the lack of French Canadian DNA as they have a smaller cohort.

They've released an additional reconstruction. It appears to be made using AI generation, and based on the older, clay reconstruction. It hasn't been uploaded to NamUs yet.

His ethnic origins make me wonder if he was a “ snowbird” living in FL for the winter and returning north for the summer. Although in my experience, most snowbirds are couples. I lived south of there, in the Melbourne/ Palm Bay Area for a number of years.

If not, perhaps he was visiting for Bike Week in Daytona? Perhaps ran into some unsavory characters or decided he wanted to live off grid in his later years.
