Remains identified as girl, 15, as death linked to serial killer

Susan Poole, 15, was a high school dropout whose family reported her missing just before Christmas in 1972. A year and a half later, skeletal remains were found in Palm Beach.

"Investigators are hoping to speak to several friends who lived near Poole when she disappeared and could possibly fill in some blanks about her activities during that time.

Springer wants to know if she frequently hitchhiked or whether she had ever confided in them about any kind of relationship with Schaeffer.

For Poole's mother, who is in her 90s, and siblings, the news has brought some closure, Springer said.

'The family was happy to know what happened,' he said. 'It's been a long time waiting to see what happened to their sister.'"

'New technology comes at a price': $500K federal grant to help PBSO pay for DNA tests in cold cases

PBSO's cold-case unit has nearly 500 cases it is monitoring. DNA tests already have led to several breakthroughs and arrests.

''In June, PBSO announced the identity of a teenage Broward County girl whose remains were found in 1974, tied to a tree in a thicket of mangroves in North Palm Beach.

The remains of 15-year-old Susan Poole were identified through the assistance of Othram, a private forensic laboratory based near Houston. Poole's then-unknown remains were sent there after lab officials in December indicated they could potentially find a match through genealogy technology, PBSO said. ''

''Investigators are still attempting to identify her killer, saying that Gerard Schaefer, a former Martin County Sheriff's Office deputy and a suspected serial killer, is the most likely suspect. Schaefer, who was convicted in the 1973 slaying to two teenage girls in St. Lucie County, was killed in prison in 1995 by a fellow inmate.''
