I have the impression that it was something of the moment... the opportunists are the ones who are most likely to get their way. When you have no reason or motive to kill, or even be in the area...why would the police suspect you? DNA is catching up with the perpetrators of some of these random crimes now, but if there is no DNA evidence or even a body, then it is difficult to find out who the killer is...
The saddest in this case are the children who were thrown away forever...
