The bridge is brand new....

[FONT=&amp]A pedestrian bridge collapsed on Thursday at Florida International University in Miami Dade County, trapping several people and cars underneath the structure.[/FONT]
[FONT=&amp]The bridge connects the university with the city of Sweetwater and was only opened days ago, CBS Miami reported. The channel showed footage of firefighters climbing on the wreckage of the bridge while paramedics treated several people on the road.[/FONT]
[FONT=&amp]Miami police warned people to avoid the area.[/FONT]
[FONT=&amp]Live footage on CBS Miami showed the bridge had collapsed on top of at least three vehicles. Firefighters were on the scene and medics were treating injured people. Emergency personnel appeared to be trying to work their way through a hole in the top of the bridge.[/FONT]
[FONT=&amp]The bridge spans several lanes of traffic. The Miami Herald reported that it was installed on Saturday morning.

A pedestrian walkway in Miami collapsed on Thursday, killing several people.

The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed several fatalities and multiple vehicles were crushed by the span near Florida International University's campus.

I heard on FOX that the bridge had workers still working on it and was not open yet to the public.

That span.....my first thought as an architect.....why not a suspension bridge?
Too much compression and weight.....ugh.
Wondering what the cause was.....workmanship? concrete quality? engineering miscalculation?

Those poor people, going about their lives....

And there is no central support in the middle of it.

The contractor and engineer are going to be lawsuit targets...

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the concrete will be found to be the cause. Wrong ratio or something.
2nd thought is the welding.

Interviewees on CNN are referring to the pedestrian bridge having been built ABC - Accelerated Bridge Construction. Less obstruction to traffic, built quickly.
