FL - Pedestrian bridge collapses at Florida International University, Miami, 2018

That looks like the Fire Department's crane. Would the Fire Department be in charge of stress testing, or is that crane rigged up to start lifting and moving debris? Also good the NTSB came in so quickly. Glad they did.

When it first happened my local news had live coverage and I noticed early on there were no cranes on site.

"The two largest construction firms involved in building a newly installed pedestrian bridge that collapsed, killing up to 10 at*Florida*International University on Thursday, both had serious safety violations.

Munilla Construction Management, a South Florida firm and*Figg Bridge Group, a Tallahassee firm, were partnered to build FIU's bridge in Miami. Both companies have been accused of shoddy work, after incidents in which the companies were accused of being responsible for other bridges that have collapsed.*

A Figg contracted bridge's 90-ton portion collapsed during construction in 2012. It dropped 40 feet to the ground onto railroad tracks below, according to the*Virginian-Pilot. Four people were injured, and authorities called it pure luck no one was killed."

It was supposed to have one support.
Did it?

Not that I have seen, Pamela. When they swung this bridge around for placement Saturday I believe, it didn't show any cabling support above the surface of the bridge. Today I only saw placements of supports underneath each side but not on top or in the middle underneath this wide span.

No wonder it collapsed. :(

How else would they do stress test?

Rick Scott talking now. Pray. Will work on rescue. It was an FIU project, not a FDOT project.

Rubio up next.

Volume is very low for me.

Rubio talked to Secy of Transp, OSHA, NTSB. Part of this was federal funding. We deserve to know what went wrong. Will figure out errors, what led to it.

This may have already been posted. If so, here it is again;

The vid in the link shows, in time-lapse, how the bridge was built, and moved into place.

Leonor Flores ’98 is a project executive and one of 63 FIU alumni who work for MCM, the construction firm building the FIU-Sweetwater UniversityCity Bridge, which will further connect FIU and its northerly neighbor, the City of Sweetwater. She was excited to share her work with her family, especially Michelle, who is interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) in school.

Biology student Roshawn Brown, who lives at 109 Tower, said he’s thankful for the future pedestrian bridge and for a safer crossing to class every day.

“Having this bridge is a blessing,” he said, adding that it was cool to watch the rig move the section into place after having passed by it in progress every day since construction began in 2017. “It was beautiful. It was amazing to watch something like this, because I’ve always seen highways and bridges being built, and I’ve never understood how this is made possible.”

To keep the inevitable disruption of traffic associated with bridge construction to a minimum, the 174-foot portion of the bridge was built adjacent to Southwest 8th Street using a method called Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) and was driven into its perpendicular position across the road by a rig in only six hours on Saturday, March 10.

Search & rescue continues...

On CNN just now they said the rescuers are still waiting to see if they hear noises from survivors trapped in the cars. Mentioned using dogs, but last I saw the dogs were not there.

Why don't they just start moving the debris off the cars?

PC is beginning in a few

https://www.cnn.com/2018/03/15/us/miami-bridge-collapse-latest/index.html

I have been watching Fox all afternoon since it came on, and they had a segment around 4:30pm showing the dog going under the bridge searching for survivors.

Moving anything underneath the bridge in the dire condition its now in could cause the bridge to collapse even more and become even more unstable. This is very dangerous for all of the first responders on the scene too.

homicide investigation?

I would think so. This is going to turnout to be gross negligence with loss of life and serious injuries so they can and will most likely be charged with manslaughter.

Fire Chief up

Utilizing all their equipment, have all their equip and search canines. Removed 9 victims early on will keep looking for others to rescue. Will also help with recovery efforts.

Not sure who next guy is. A first responder. Went into search and rescue mode. No more information available. Roadway will be shut down for an extended period of time. Detour until further notice.

Miami PD - Thoughts and prayers. PD will lead the homicide investigation. Established unified command center. will work with other departments. Will be a long, long process to get through rubble. FD will help them get through it to recover any deceased individuals. Will advise any info about rescues. Asking reporters to not report leaks about victims out of respect for families. Off duty officer provided CPR to a victim. Will probably have a sad outcome.

President of FIU - expressing condolences, prayers, thoughts, etc. Five days ago they were celebrating this bridge. Repeating talking points from 5 days ago. Now feeling immense sadness. Committed to assist in all efforts. Thanking first responders, all who are there to help people.

Now Mayor of Sweetwater - Missed most of his talk, stepped away

Q & A now

Sound low I can't hear it all.

FIU president said they began project in 2010. Used engineering firm recommended by FDOT.

Fire Chief

Have located victims but can't identify them? We located __ (sorry can't hear)

Using all S&R - using cameras, etc will have to move some piece by piece.

Univ President

Priority is with families and victims now. No thoughts about what's next

Now doing Spanish.

homicide investigation?

Yes, that's what the police chief said. He wasn't making accusations, but he said they will conduct a criminal investigation. It will take a while.
