Largo Police Chief Mike Loux gave a news briefing on Monday, December 15, 2025 regarding the ongoing search efforts for missing and endangered 87-year-old Petro Kuqo.

A video of the news briefing can be found at the link below:

The 87-year-old wandered away from his apartment in Pinellas County on Friday.

Surveillance video showed Kuqo walking through the complex parking lot.

His granddaughter, Elina Mita, said, “He had gotten up and had his coffee, and while everyone else was still sleeping, he just walked out in his pajamas with no wallet or anything, which is really not normal. Usually he, like, gets dressed to like, go out even for a walk, and he probably thought he was just going for a walk and with his memory got lost.”

(Police chief said at PC that Petro is Albanian and speaks no English.)

Police said Friday afternoon they aren't on scene searching anymore, but are still working the case they said is still active.

*****
“I have hope that we're going to find him, and we're not going to stop looking until we find him,” said his daughter, Linda Mita.

For years, Mita says her father would travel back and forth from the U.S. to Greece, but now with dementia, he, his wife, and two more family members moved here for good about seven weeks ago.

*****
She says while family was sleeping last Friday, he left his new apartment wearing a grey pajama top, dark sweatpants and Skechers slides. They kept an Air Tag for finding him in case he wandered off in his wallet because previously he never left home without dressing and taking it with him.

*****
“Almost everybody has a [surveillance] camera,” said Linda’s husband, Kosta, addressing the public. “Please spend five, 10 minutes, go through that Friday and see if anything you can see is going to be really, really helpful for the police and for us.”

“We're continuing to post flyers and spreading out our search,” said their daughter, Elena, in a Facebook video posted by private search team We Are The Essentials. “Police are spreading out their search a little bit further in case someone gave him a ride to help him and left him somewhere.”

I hope he is still alive. As far as the weather goes, temperatures are in the high 60s F and can be in the 50s F overnight. Better than in many other areas of the US for survival without winter clothing, but hypothermia is still possible. I hope he didn't go near water, some lost people with dementia are drawn to water.

I hope he is found soon. Perhaps he found a garden shed or some unlocked structure to stay in.

This city isn't too far from Clearwater or the St Petersburg/Clearwater Airport. There's a lot of residential and commercial property.
