I can't believe it's been 7 years...this case has always bothered me....an innocent victim just out shopping. Frightening...

I'm assuming they checked with LE in Alaska about Israel Keys for DNA rule out. The other kidnapping of the mom at the same shopping center, she gave a composite drawing and it looks so much like Keys. Just thought it may be a place to look. Not sure but I thought someone passed it on to them in FL and they were looking into it, for the other kidnapping.

From March 2016
At this point, Detective William Springer doesn’t care who solves the slaying of Randi Gorenberg, even though it has consumed six years of his life.

“I don’t care if Santa Claus walks into the sheriff’s office with the guy in cuffs and says, ‘I got your guy,’ I would be happy,” Springer said at a news conference Wednesday marking the ninth anniversary of the fatal shooting of the suburban Boca Raton woman.

Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County shares Springer’s sense of urgency. On Wednesday, it raised its reward for the tip that brings in the gunman to $15,000, up from $1,000.

[h=1]NEW: PBSO hopes social-media blitzes crack Randi Gorenberg, Cynthia Moffett cold-case murders[/h]

Their stories are linked by a common anniversary and a similar pursuit to find their killers.

Today marks 12 years since 52-year-old Cynthia Moffett was fatally shot by an unknown assailant outside a suburban Greenacres golf club’s pro shop — and 11 since someone killed Randi Gorenberg, also 52, dumping her body behind the South County Civic Center in suburban Delray Beach.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office marked the anniversaries by taking to social media in hopes of finding new leads in the cold cases.

Moffett’s and Gorenberg’s stories were shared on the department’s Twitter and Facebook pages, through postings with historical photos and special hashtags — #Justice4CynthiaMoffett and #Justice4Randi.

Bronx Justice News Investigation: “Cold” Boca Mall Murders Still Reverberating in NYC, as Documents Shed New Light on Attacks

Snip
The slain mother and daughter weren’t the only victims with roots in New York City; Randi Gorenberg, a Brooklyn-born mother of two, was abducted and slain in March 2007 after an afternoon of shopping at the same mall. Last seen on surveillance footage exiting the posh retail property, Gorenberg wasn’t seen in public again until half an hour later, when shocked witnesses watched her being fatally shot and tossed from the passenger side of her new Mercedes SUV.

I live a few miles from the mall where this happened, Town Center, and have always been hyper-alert and nervous when I’ve visited this mall. I used to shop at the Sears store at Town Center, but that store is now closed. Most of the remaining stores are too upscale for my tastes and budget.. The parking lot is huge and oversized, with plenty of opportunities for more crime. The parking spaces closest to the center entranced are blocked off for paid valet parking, so most people park on the vulnerable periphery of the mall. In any case, I haven’t visited since the pandemic began.

I think the Boca Raton PD missed opportunities to catch the killer(s) by keeping other crimes at local upscale shopping venues secret. There was at least one other kidnapping of a mother and child who were eventually freed, but the method was almost identical. The Boca Raton PD also focused on Gorenberg’s husband and son, refusing to acknowledge the similarities between Gorenberg’s murder and the very similar murder of Nancy Bochicchio and her daughter, both initiated at the same mall. They also refused to acknowledge the similarity to the earlier non-fatal kidnapping. The PBSO (Palm Beach County Sheriff) thought the crimes were connected; the Boca Raton PD was concerned with image and maintaining the facade of a low crime rate.

In my opinion, there were things about this crime that pointed to someone other than family. Gorenberg’s sneakers were removed - she was left shoeless. They weren’t expensive sneakers. I have always thought that this act pointed to a perpetrator who grew up in extreme poverty, in a place where people were often shoeless. Removing the shoes, IMO, was an act of rage that perpetrator considered a humiliating gesture. It is of interest that the POI fled to his native Dominican Republic, a place that has extreme poverty.

Yet another possible clue that Gorenberg’s murder was carried out by a gang member was the use of her stolen credit cards in a mall in Holyoke, MA. Holyoke is near Springfield, MA, a city with a lot of poverty and gang activity. Both cities have gangs that also have members in South Florida. There’s no indication that Gorenberg’s family members have been tied to any gang. The POI, Michel Barerra, was said to be connected to MS-13. Some sources say Bererra has ties to Cuba and Mexico. Other sources say the Dominican Republic. Barerra’s father is in Federal prison for violent crimes.

The son had problems with drugs, but neither he nor his associates have been linked to violent crime or gangs. The victim’s husband had issues, but nothing that would include murder..

A jailhouse informant who told authorities of Barerra’s involvement noted that several people were involved, all linked to MS-13.

I wonder if familial DNA would be an option here? If the father is in the pen, then wouldn't they have taken his DNA? Perhaps a bit of comparison on CODIS or maybe combined with genetic genealogy. They found the car, there has to be some DNA there as the perp was driving it. Did he change the drivers seat position? Even if he wore gloves, I bet there were hairs, clothing fibers, etc.

It is now 15 years since Gorenberg was murdered. Boca Raton's Town Center Mall murder mystery still under investigation, 15 years later Not much new, although the actual over-the-air coverage on another local TV station noted that the PBSO was looking at DNA.
I saw this last night but on WPTV. My friend was the original forensic artist on this case and he reminded me there is a 3rd woman who was abducted at the Boca mall who was let go by the kidnapper. Her identity has been redacted all these years but here is an interview she gave about the case: Terror at the mall

''BOCA RATON, Fla. – A family was marking the painful anniversary Thursday of a Palm Beach County mother’s unsolved murder. The question remains: Was the feared Central American gang MS-13 involved?

Sixteen years after a kidnapper or kidnappers abducted a 52-year-old woman in Boca Raton and she turned up dead in Delray Beach — having suffered a gunshot wound to the head — detectives still need clues.''

''Randi Gorenberg vanished on March 23, 2007, after she bought a CD and shorts at the Town Center, a shopping mall related to a series of abductions and murders during robberies in Boca.''

''In 2011, detectives publicly identified Michel Barrera, a fugitive who was associated with the feared MS-13 gang, as a person of interest in Gorenberg’s case.

The cold case had similarities with other cases including the cold case of Nancy Bochicchio, 47, and her 7-year-old daughter, Joey Bochicchio-Hauser. They were also the victims of abduction, robbery, and murder after a visit to the Town Center in 2007.

Detectives asked anyone with information about the unsolved crimes to call Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-8477. There is a $15,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case''

I looked on Palm Beach County online court records but nothing comes up with his name. I thought maybe if he was a known gang member, there's some type of rap sheet.
