Authorities in Florida are calling a former Virginia law-enforcement officer a "person of interest" in the killings of his wife and teenage son, whose bodies were found in their home near West Palm Beach.

Jamie Daniel Jr., a former Louisa County deputy and University of Virginia police officer, has been in a mental-health facility since a few hours before his wife, Renay, 49, and son, Sebree, 17, were found dead in their house Friday. Both suffered multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said.

Tormented and lonely, 17-year-old Sebree Daniel once contemplated taking his own life, according to his mother and police records.

But he didn't die at his own hands; Sebree and his stepmother, Renay Daniel, were killed in a double homicide, sheriff's investigators said. They were found dead Friday in their gated Wellington home, each shot multiple times.

The only "person of interest" in their deaths is father and husband Jamie Daniel Jr., 43, Sheriff's Office spokesman Paul Miller said Monday. Daniel is being held in a psychiatric treatment center where he was taken hours before his 49-year-old wife and son were found dead in their home.
