Baer, who is a retired Jacksonville Sheriff Office Homicide detective, was arrested in Jacksonville on Wednesday and Schafer, who was Baer’s then-wife, was arrested in Jefferson City, Missouri.
Kawaf was stabbed to death and robbed. His wife -- scuffled with the other woman. Kawaf’s wife was taken inside & tied up. Baer * Schafer made off with about $30,000. Two DNA profiles were developed in 2003. In May, through genetic testing, police were able to get two profiles. DNA profiles established by Bode Technology Group, Inc. on 8/19/14. On 1/7/19, the female profile was submitted to Parabon Nanolabs, thru DNA Labs for the purpose of conducting genetic genealogy analysis. On 2/3/20, the male profile was also submitted to Parabon for same reasons. The male profile was then submitted to Family Tree DNA for further genetic genealogy analysis on 5/22/20. On 6/5/20 Baer was identified as the possible contributor to male DNA profile. On 6/11/20 Schafer was identified as the possible female suspect contributor.
7/2/20 Update: No update yet on Schafer in court site as of 7/22/20. Still in jail in Missouri.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — A plea deal may be imminent in the case of a former Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office detective and his wife charged in the murder of a convenience store owner in the late 1990s.

According to a new court filing in the case, Melissa Jo Schafer — the ex-wife of retired JSO Det. William “Billy” Baer — is scheduled for a “disposition” Friday, 12/18/20. The case had been scheduled for a routine pre-trial hearing on Wednesday, but was moved Tuesday and slated for formal resolution, which is called a “disposition.”

A disposition can also mean prosecutors are dropping charges, unlikely in this high-profile case.

Two law-enforcement sources familiar with the case say Schafer will plead guilty and provide testimony against her ex-husband. The two were arrested in the cold case murder in July after a genealogy database linked evidence collected at the crime scene to the DNA of the defendants’ relative.
