Attorneys questioned nearly 200 potential jurors for the retrial of polo mogul John Goodman by Tuesday afternoon in Tampa.

Questioning on Tuesday was predominantly about whether jurors could suffer the hardship of coming to Palm Beach County for a long trial and also whether they knew about Goodman through the media.

TAMPA, Fla. - At the end of jury selection for the John Goodman retrial on Wednesday in Tampa the judge said he is considering options to find more jurors.

They are now down to 52 potential jurors.

Many have been eliminated because of the hardship of moving to West Palm Beach for nearly a month. Others heard of Goodman in the media.

Attorneys said Wednesday they are hopeful they will be able to pick a jury from the current pool, but the judge told them to consider the other options as a last minute resort.

Travis Van Vliet: Prospective juror arrested in Goodman case; trial to begin Saturday

TAMPA, Fla. - A 23-year-old prospective juror for the John Goodman trial is under arrest for contempt of court.

A member of the defense team reportedly heard the man in the hall say that he knew the case was a retrial.

Judge Jeffrey Colbath called in Travis Van Vliet, a 23-year-old college student, to question him.

He was nervous -- quivering -- and told the judge he did "research" during lunch -- and learned that this was a retrial.

The judge told the juror, "you are starting to make me upset. I don't want to throw you in jail." But that's exactly what the frustrated judge did
.

It looks like a great resource -- thanks!! I Bookmarked it -- I'm ready!!!

Will Goodman take the stand this 'go-round'?

After the news about the IMO, foolish (ex) juror who is cooling his heels in the cooler, it sure sounds like the judge has set a mood for this trial:
No Fooling Around, Folks. Don't test me -- I am the boss in this room. -- I've got no problem with that.

borndem, I think this trial will be just as interesting as the first one.

I won't be able to watch it continuously but I do hope to "keep up" with the trial testimony each day. I am hoping that WPTV or another media source will archive it.

I do believe Judge Colbath will have very little patience and will move this trial forward.

I, like you, wonder if John Goodman will take the stand.

Now .. . we can hope that there is no misconduct with any of the jurors (only to be discovered after the verdict . . and Goodman might get another trial!) Yikes!

Scott Wilson had his entire future ahead of him and John Goodman took that away from Wilson. Who knows what greatness he might have achieved in his lifetime. What kind of person would walk away from the scene of such a horrific accident and let a person drown without making any attempt to immediately call 911 or attempt to save Scott Wilson?

My mother was killed in a car accident as a result of a drunk driver. Needless to say, I am not very fond of drunk drivers! Period!

What kind of person, indeed. Someone who was too drunk to either know what had happened, or to care.

Oh my, Ann-Tx, what an unbelievable tragedy for you and your family. It would be very difficult for me not to have left my seat in a courtroom to just go over & choke the driver, and I am one big wimp. But that would be quite a different story in that situation -- my wimpiness would be totally overcome by grief and anger.

If someone is drunk & he/she gets behind the wheel & starts a car, he is loading a pistol, IMO. If he then gets on a street, he has fired a shot in the dark, knowing it could very well hurt someone . It may hit someone; it may not. Those acts are legal malice. Malice must be proved to convict for 2nd degree murder in NC. Yes, malice is spite & ill will, however, the legal meaning of malice also refers to a person's intention to do injury to another party. And that is exactly what a drunk behind a wheel is doing -- no regard for others and knowing that he may well do harm. Grrrr. Excuse me for preaching to the choir. And that is what John Goodman did -- he loaded the gun and went out and fired it. And on that night, the bullet hit & killed a fine young man. No, Goodman didn't swerve & try to hit him, but he got behind the wheel when he was way beyond the legal limit. A cab? A friend? No-o-o-o, I'll get in my car & drive myself home.

And that second in time cannot be re-called. And Goodman needs to be punished just like any other stupid drunk behind a wheel should be. In jail. For years.

I watched a trial here in Raleigh & the driver was drunk (0.23), got in his $85,000 Benz & killed a 20 yr old professional ballerina by rear-ending her car while his speed was ~ 85mph. He had a scratch on his forehead -- not even a stitch or a Bandaid. He got sentenced to 3-5 years. The jury had a problem understanding the legal meaning of "malice," (as I said, part of a M2 requirement), so they gave him "Death by Vehicle."

Please forgive the rant.

Potential juror in Goodman trial jailed
Jury seated to hear trial in Tampa

Published 10:15 PM EDT Oct 09, 2014

WPBF - West Palm Beach, FL

TAMPA, Fla. —Just as lawyers were finally poised to pick a jury after four days of questioning in the John Goodman trial, one juror was found to be in contempt of court, handcuffed and led from the courtroom to jail.

After four days of intense questioning to weed out jurors who had heard of the highly publicized case and find out who could endure the hardship of being sequestered in Palm Beach County for three weeks, a defense assistant alerted the judge she had overheard a juror talking to another about the case, specifically the highly guarded information that this was a re-trial. Jurors are forbidden from knowing this about a defendant, and it could trigger a mistrial.

John Goodman retrial: Final day of jury selection highlighted by juror's arrest

By Brittany Shammas,
Sun Sentinel -
Orlando Sentinel - Orlando, FL

October 9, 2014 - 10:56 PM

Both sides in Wellington polo mogul John Goodman's DUI manslaughter retrial agreed on 10 jurors late Thursday — but not before a juror's gossip took the proceedings off course and ended in his arrest.

Prospective juror Travis Van Vliet was handcuffed and hauled to jail after Palm Beach County Court Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey Colbath learned he told another man in the jury pool that the case was being tried for the second time.

Snipped:

The chosen jury, culled from a batch of 220 Hillsborough County residents, includes four men and six women. Among them: a salesman, a phlebotomist, a Navy veteran who now makes parts for ATMs, a retiree, a former child protective investigator who now teaches parenting and a YMCA group exercise director

Snipped:

Van Vliet, who is studying criminal justice online and said days ago that the trial would be "an opportunity for me to see the inner workings of things," faces a misdemeanor charge of indirect criminal contempt of court. He's set to be arraigned early Friday.

After further research, I concluded the Contempt Hearing for Travis Van Vilet was earlier this morning. WPBF has the video box up and usually would have taken it down by now.

You can read the tweets from Terri Parker, Reporter - WPBF, regarding Van Vilet's Contempt Hearing at this Link:
