"At least five people were killed when a gunman opened fire in a SunTrust Bank in Sebring, Florida, on Wednesday, police said.

The 21-year-old suspect, Zephen Xaver, barricaded himself inside before later surrendering to authorities, police said.

The suspect had contacted authorities and told them that he fired shots inside the bank, sending officers rushing to the scene around 12:30 p.m., the Sebring Police Department said.

Negotiations to get the barricaded suspect to leave weren't successful, police said, so a SWAT team was sent in. Negotiations then continued, police said, and the "suspect eventually surrendered."

Sebring police Chief Karl Hoglund said the victims were “senselessly murdered” by Zephen Xaver, 21, who surrendered after a Highlands County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team entered the bank.

“Today’s been a tragic day in our community,” Hoglund said. “We’ve suffered a significant loss at the hands of a senseless criminal doing a senseless crime.”

Officials have not publicly identified the victims.

WFTS reported that the front of the bank appears to have been damaged with doors ripped off their hinges.

A police commander had said “several people are down,” WFLA reported.

The Highlands News Sun reported that county officials said that five people had been injured.

County officials told WFTS several people were taken to an area hospital. There is no word on their injuries.

The sheriff’s office told coworkers and family members of those who could be in the bank to go to a local hotel to await the latest news, WFLA reported.

Several ambulances were at the scene and businesses in the area of the bank were in a lockdown status, WTSP reported.

The News Sun reported two schools in the area are on conditional lockdown.

Five people were shot dead after a 21-year-old gunman opened fire inside a Florida bank Wednesday afternoon.

Officers responded to the SunTrust Bank branch located at 1901 US 27 South around 12.36pm after a suspect, identified as Zephen Xaver, called 911 and reported that he had fired shots inside the bank, according to the Sebring Police Department.

After a standoff with officers and SWAT agents, Xaver eventually surrendered to authorities.

Video shows him being perp-walked in handcuffs through the parking lot to a police vehicle.

Initial reports said multiple people had been injured during the shooting, but authorities later confirmed during a press conference that at least five people had been 'senselessly murdered'.
