US Secret Service agents and a deputy from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's office confronted the man, who was in his 20s, and shots were fired during the encounter, the Secret Service says.

The man's identity is not being released yet.

None of the Secret Service's protectees were present at the location at the time, the Secret Service says.

President Donald Trump is staying at the White House this weekend, according to his public schedule.

U.S. Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot and killed a man who entered the secure perimeter at Mar-a-Lago with “what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can,” Secret Service announced in a statement on Sunday.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Rick Bradshaw said during a press conference that a deputy and two Secret Service agents went to investigate when the security detail detected that someone entered the Florida club's perimeter.

"They confronted a white male that was carrying a gas can and a shotgun," Bradshaw said. "He was ordered to drop those two pieces of equipment that he had with him, at which time he put down the gas can, raised the shotgun to a shooting position."

"At that point in time, the deputy and the two Secret Service agents fired their weapons and neutralized the threat," he continued. "He is deceased at the scene."

No law enforcement officers were injured.

It's always been the case the anyone who rocks up at a Presidental residence and aims a firearm at Secret Service agents isn't going to be long for this world.

Suicide by cop/secret service, maybe.

The man, who was in his early 20s and from North Carolina, had a gas can and a shotgun, according to Anthony Guglielmi, the spokesman. He had been reported missing by his family a few days ago, and investigators believe he headed south and picked up the shotgun along the way.

The man killed was identified by investigators as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin,

I posted his missing poster, but it was deleted on the sheriff office's FB site. Edited to remove the link.

I agree. Unless the man doesn’t follow the news at ALL, he must have known that Trump wasn’t even there this weekend. MOO

I am seeing screenshots of posts from family but can't find them on FB, I think they must have deleted them. It sounds like local LE called the FBI, I bet they have an idea of why.

Since he was carrying a gas can, maybe he planned to start a fire.

Guglielmi said a box for the weapon was discovered in the man's vehicle after the incident, which took place around 1:30 a.m.

The man killed was identified by investigators as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin, according to a person familiar with the matter. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss details of the investigation.

Trump has faced threats to his life before, including two assassination attempts during the 2024 campaign. Although the president often spends weekends at his resort, he and first lady Melania Trump were at the White House when the breach at Mar-a-Lago occurred.

After entering near the north gate of the property, the man was confronted by two Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County sheriff's deputy, according to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw

Thank goodness the President and First Lady stayed in Washington this weekend. And the Secret Service acted quickly when the secure perimeter was breached.
