Sarasota man charged in alleged murder-for-hire plot

Deputies say Harper told an informant he wanted to pay someone to kill to end a lawsuit.

In December 2023, Leland Harper, 63, was convicted and sentenced in Oregon to 25 years in prison for child sexual abuse. The next month, Sarasota deputies also charged Harper with committing multiple counts of sexual battery and lewd and lascivious molestation here, a probable cause affidavit says.

While in the Sarasota County Jail, deputies say Harper told a confidential informant that he was innocent but wanted to pay someone to kill the family suing him in order to end the lawsuit. Deputies say Harper wanted the murders to look like a murder-suicide.

A bank account was set up for the informant and on March 6, Harper’s wife wired $29,998.87 to that account.
