GUILTY FL - Shaianna Hare, 2, strangled by python, Oxford, 1 July 2009

People are so, SO stupid. Snakes are also pretty expensive aren't they? You have to live with roomates but you can afford a big snake?

No snakes in small children households. Needs to be a law - and I'm the last person to want a damn law for everything, but come on! What is common sense to us is lost on others but the kids really do need to be protected.

I found it odd that a)bf didn't seem overly upset in the 911 call; and b)he said "the dumb snake" killed her...I guess you had to hear it, but he sounded like an 8 year old.

I have a 2 year old, and it just makes my heart hurt to think of what that poor baby went through, whether it was the snake, or not.

:woohoo: HES GOING TO BE CHARGED!!!!!!!!:woohoo:

Not much but for now hes going to be charged for not having the permit & for failing to have the snake in a habitat with a lock PER THE LAW! Manslaughter and other charges could come as the investigation develops!!!!!

This man had NO business having an 8+ foot snake in the house ESPECIALLY A HOUSE WITH A BABY LIVING IN IT!
He didnt have the knowledge or finances(or common sense)to own ANY type of pet,let alone this snake........I know being stupid isnt a crime but Im glad they can get this guy on SOMETHING (& yes he sounded like an 8 year old on the 911 tape.........WTF is with him blaming the snake?? :behindbar

Just re-read more detailed article & yes charges should be brought cos as I said the snake probably wasnt in a secure habitat......A DOG CRATE IS NOT A SNAKE HABITAT! Snakes CANNOT be in a cage or ANYTHING with openings!!! WTF?? How much do we want to guess that the "bag" was a pillowcase. The bigger a snake gets the more they want to "wander" & they are VERY crafty & clever. This guy is a dumba$$ & should be charged with negligence. When my snake outgrew her tank(which they will do.........very expensive to continously buy new habitats) & before I had a chance to get her a new tank,in desperation,I held her overnight in a plastic storage bin with a locking lid! she had plenty of air holes in the lid but I could not, for her safety or ours, leave her in an unsecure tank..............WHY WAS THIS SNAKE IN A DOG CAGE AFTER ALREADY ESCAPING AND WHY ISNT THIS GUY BEING CHARGED???????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Darnell, the snake's owner, reportedly told investigators he put the python in a bag before putting it into a glass cage Tuesday night.
http://www.dailycommercial.com/localnews/story/070209python

Authorities removed the snake from the small house, bordered by cow pastures, Wednesday afternoon after obtaining a search warrant. Once outside the python was placed in a bag, which was put inside a dog crate. It was still alive

The authorities put it in a dog crate not the owner. I agree this is a sad senseless case. No reason for a baby to die.

A pet Python?
Is that possible?

This was exactly why I was terrified when my sister's dumb a** boyfriend bought an Anaconda. I sent her every story I could find about snakes killing children and worried her to death until they finally got rid of it. May this baby R.I.P.

When you say "got rid of it," I'm hoping you mean rid of the boyfriend.

Wow! Burm's get really big, they make purses out of these suckers. It's not the snakes fault,it's the people that own them. People do not realize how expensive they are to feed and take care of. They get to big or they can't afford to feed them and they let them go. The snake must have found the child to be a threat or food. I read where they let the little girl hug it and hold it also.

The Humane Society of the United States said including Wednesday's death, at least 12 people have been killed in the U.S. by pet pythons since 1980, including five children.
You also have to have a permit in Florida to have these kind of snakes and he will most likely be charged for that also. This crazy nut had a 6 ft. boa to. What gives? Are people really this dumb? When a snake constricts it bites something first then wraps the body around the prey. I cannot imagine a snake thinking it could eat a child/or anything that size. The jaws will open very wide but IMO not that wide. In his mug shot the guy is smiling WTH?

Deputies said negligence charges are pending, and some drugs were found inside the home after the incident. Darnell did not have a permit to own a python.

The Department of Children and Families also confirmed Thursday that it looked into allegations of marijuana in the home of the 2-year-old girl who was strangled by a pet python Wednesday.

The investigation began in May 2009 and closed on June 12. During that time, DCF says its workers went into the home, photographed the large snake and decided it did not need to be removed from the home.

Poor little baby.

Burm's have to have heat to survive. I am wondering if the snake found warmth next to the child and the child startled it somehow by turning over and the snake reacted.

When you say "got rid of it," I'm hoping you mean rid of the boyfriend.

I wish! :furious: He is one class A *sshole. My sisters house looks like a zoo with pit bulls, scorpians, spiders, lizards, at least a dozen fish tanks with piranha and eels and other fish, frogs, snapping turtles, snakes, etc. Creeps me out! I worry about my niece pulling a tank over and getting cut or getting bit by something all the time.

Tonia, I went to your link but didn't quote it because it was long. I agree with the people who commented on that article. Why was that man smiling? It makes me sick to see that big smile on his face when a precious little girl is dead due to his actions.

Why is he smiling? Poor baby what a horrible way to die.

Who knows why he's smiling in this mug shot? The article says he started stabbing the snake when he found out what it had done. I'm hard-pressed to believe he's happy this child died.

Was that a mug shot taken today?

That's the thing - we don't know. I promise you though that the average newspaper wouldn't have the first problem running an old mugshot they may have dug up on him.

You know I was just so struck by the picture and this story so breaks my heart that it did not click that this may be an old mugshot.

Snakes are beautiful creatures and people are idiots.

If not the snake, then this child would probably have been guzzling dangerous chemicals under the kitchen sink, left in a hot car, playing in the highway or left alone in a pool.

I am sure it is an old mug shot which is troubling in itself. You have to wonder why anyone would be grinning this happily as they are having their mug shot taken.

I think the boyfriend was sincerely distraught and tried to save the baby, but the ignorance in all this is staggering. I hope the other children are with someone that truly cares they are secure and comforted. How scary this must be for them?

Well, DCF may have been looking into allegations of marijuana, but he was charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana on June 29, 2009 according to Sumter County records, link here

https://www2.myfloridacounty.com/ccm/do/personCaseSearch?county=60

If the link doesn't work, just click on new search and type in his name...

And that was stemming from a May 22, 2009 offense

The 911 call concerned me as well. Instead of calling for an ambulance or help, he announces to the dispatch that the baby is dead and proceeds to give what I believe is an alibi. (The stupid snake did it. In my head I hear "My dumb b*itch snake did it) I've been wrong before and this is so tragic, I almost did not post my suspicions.
I am interested in hearing any autopsy reports on this poor child and I hope LE is investigating this guy.
