GUILTY FL - Shaianna Hare, 2, strangled by python, Oxford, 1 July 2009

I am sure it is an old mug shot which is troubling in itself. You have to wonder why anyone would be grinning this happily as they are having their mug shot taken.

I think the boyfriend was sincerely distraught and tried to save the baby, but the ignorance in all this is staggering. I hope the other children are with someone that truly cares they are secure and comforted. How scary this must be for them?

I am absolutely deranged enough to grin in a mugshot (I've never been in that position before thank goodness, but I have real issues with authority and, depending on the crime, I'd love to send the police the message that they aren't bothering me one bit by smiling like I'd just won the lottery). I doubt I'm the only one with this makeup as I've seen quite a few mugshots of smiling suspects (usually after being arrested for drug/alcohol possession - and some are probably still happily high).

I too think the boyfriend was seriously distraught. I too think you are playing with fire to have an animal (even a dog) in a house with a small child. My prayers for this family - this is a very sad story.

This just INFURIATES me! I cannot believe this two year old child died due to the absolute negligence of this mother and live-in boyfriend. Just another case of the mother putting a boyfriend ahead of her child. SHE let the boyfriend have the snake there.

There should be hard charges for the both of them! This was a vicious, needless, and senseless death of this little girl. And for what? Because the boyfriend wanted to have this dangerous snake in the house and was not even secured.

:furious::furious::furious:

JMO But if there are charges against the two of them for allowing the snake to be there, then there needs to be charges for the DCF workers, that didn't see any reason for the snake to be removed on June 12. The DCF workers should have known better. They were there looking into the welfare of the child. Shouldn't they have been worried about the snake being in the home? There are people that do not see danger in anything, I have a brother and sister that are that way, DCF should have pointed out the danger.IMO

This is a great point, McDraw!

I analyzed the audio of Charles Darnell from the 911 call for Reverse Speech. Reverse Speech is messages from our unconscious mind embedded backward into speech. These messages can be found amongst the gibberish by reversing audio recordings.

911 Call:
Our stupid snake got out in the middle of the night, and strangled the baby.
I'm going to live with what I did.

...our snake. We have a Burmese python, and she's about twelve foot long. She got out of the cage last night, and got into the baby's crib and strangled her to death.
I released it out.

It is only two reversals but they do raise questions in my mind. His first reversal suggests that he did something, not that the snake has done something.

In the second reversal it appears he is the one that let the snake out of the cage, not that the snake got out on its own.

Is it possible he could have intentionally manipulated the snake into killing the toddler while she slept? The initial coroners report indicated she was asphyxiated. From what I've read it doesn't indicate there were marks of constriction from the snake. It is reported there were a couple of bite marks on the child's head and face. These snakes will bite the victim then coil around it to suffocate it. I'm far from a snake expert, and correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I know is once a snake like that bites they don't let go to strike again. Could Darnell have suffocated the child, and then agitated the snake so that it would bite the child making it appear that the snake attacked the child to kill her? There are no reports that this snake has escaped from its cage before. But it does seem by Darnell's story the snake got out once (he happened to get out of bed to find it had escaped), he put it back into its cage and it got out again the same night. If the snake were in the habit of escaping wouldn't this be on record with the DCF?

One thing that stood out to me was he said he stabbed the snake several times to get it to let go of the child. I have a couple of problems with that. First if my child was being suffocated by a snake and I had the frame of mind to go get a knife to use on the snake I would not be stabbing at it risking stabbing my child too. I would cut the snakes head off. Secondly I may not even leave my child at that point to go get a knife. I would like to believe I would try to break its neck. By the way, it appears the stab wound(s) to the snake were not life threatening, the snake is recovering.

It was his snake, not his daughter. Could he have cared more about the snake than his girlfriend's daughter? I'm not a violent person, but I will do anything to protect my kids. If it were me at some point, during or after the attack, the snake would be dead. Leaving it with non life threatening wounds would not be an option. After reading the previous posts it appears Darnell was arrested for drugs 2 days prior to his girlfriend's daughter being killed. Is it possible that the child's death was some sort of retaliation to his girlfriend?

Between the speech reversals of Charles Darnell, and his story, things don't seem to be adding up to me.

Wonder if DCF knew the guy should've had a permit for the snake??

Who knows but personally I think they should have. If not, I think they should have said, Hey it's dangerous to have a pet snake in a house with children. But I am one of those people that see danger in everything. I drive my brother and sister crazy, they just can't see the danger. And they think I am crazy.

2 arrested in python cases

The Sumter County couple that primarily cared for the 2-year-old girl found strangled to death in her crib by their pet Burmese python in July was arrested Monday on charges of manslaughter, third-degree murder and child abuse.

The two are each being held on $35,000 bond, said Lt. Bobby Caruthers, a spokesman from the Sumter County Sheriff's office.

Third-degree murder and manslaughter both carry maximum sentences of 15 years in prison while child abuse carries a maximum sentence off five years behind bars.

Hare and Darnell will next face arraignment. All court proceedings will occur in Sumter County.

The reverse speech analysis of Charles Darnell indicates that the snake did not get out on its own, Darnell intentionally released it. If you just look at the two known reversals they tell a different story than he was saying in the forward to the 911 operator.

It would be interesting to analyze police interrogations of Darnell to what can be further revealed through his reverse speech. Based upon his reversals alone the charges seem appropriate for at least him.

The article does not give details as to what evidence police have to make the charges. Right now he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court, but for now it appears that the use of Reverse Speech has proven to be accurate as far as Darnell being responsible for the actions which lead to the child's death.

I'm going to live with what I did. I released it out.

The pet python that strangled a 2-year-old Sumter County girl 18 months ago hadn't been fed in about a month and had escaped its tank 10 times since its last meal — a road-kill squirrel, according to newly released documents.

Gypsy, the 8-foot-6-inch albino Burmese python, was most likely hungry when it escaped its terrarium and attacked Shaianna Hare in a crib, according to investigative documents examined by the Orlando Sentinel.

A review of reports in the July 1, 2009, tragedy show that the child's mother and the mother's boyfriend had kept the snake in violation of wildlife rules and apparently could not afford to feed it.
.....................

The albino python, bought at a flea market about six years ago for $200, slithered through the doublewide trailer to the child's room after escaping from a mesh laundry bag with a baseball-sized hole in it.

much more here -- **warning - there's a picture of the huge snake** for those who may not like snake pictures

They need to pass a law banning these "pets." They're an invasive species, and are capable of killing people. They cannot be trained or domesticated.

I am relieved to see that these two will be prosecuted....this just makes me so sad....that poor little girl didn't stand a chance. And these "adults" sound like a couple of idiots no matter how you call it. They are fit to care for neither children or pets. Grrrr....how infuriating.

the trial for Charles Darnell and Ashley Hare has been continued until February 15, 2011. At that point it will be a year and half and countless delays since the tragic death of a 2 year old girl. Justice for this little girl may not be swift in Sumter County, but I hope in the end the trial will be fair and justice hopefully will prevail!

It is also grossly unfair to any animal, be it a cat, dog, or even this snake, to be brought into a household where the animal cannot be properly fed or cared for. In this case, if these people couldn't (or just didn't) even feed the snake, who knows what kind of care the child was receiving. I am glad both of them are being prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for their daughter's death. :behindbar MOO
