I thought that if something happened to your children (at that age) while they are left unattended, that you are legally resposible as well as the other children could be removed from the house.

At 12 years old, one is well old enough to know that beating someone with a bat is not OK. This boy IS a violent child and should be treated as such. And yeah, maybe he should be afraid of the police; after all, he did murder someone. Sheesh.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The mother of a 12-year-old boy charged with killing a Broward County toddler was ordered to stay away from her son Thursday.
Broward County Circuit Judge Charlie Kaplan issued the order after employees at the juvenile detention center overheard Guerla Joseph encourage the boy to kill himself. The mother was also heard telling the boy that his situation was comparable to the persecution of Jesus.
Joseph denied the allegations.
"I never, never tell him that. That's a trick. They make it up," she told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel in a phone interview. "I'm not giving up, I'm going to keep praying for my son. I never said that to him."

I wonder why some people are so lucky to have children, then abuse them...while other people can't have children and want them so badly. :( Life isn't fair. :(

I don't know anything, but I wonder if this kid has been abused all his life and he was carrying on the cycle. Gosh, it is all so sad. :(

I have found a few articles/sites with information concerning the tragic death of this little girl.

The 12-year old boy was babysitting his 10-year old brother and Shaloh, his 17-month old cousin. He was trying to watch cartoons and little Shaloh would not stop crying, so he beat her to death with a baseball bat.

There is more information here:

Also, if you go to Miami's Sun-Sentinel (link below) and type Guerla Joseph (the baby's mother) in the search box, it will list several articles, videos, and pictures. She was an absolutely beautiful little girl and my heart aches for her and her family.

Thanks for these links - I do remember this case now being discussed here at WS. The mother really defended him back then - said he was innocent. Interesting to think she may now be telling him to kill himself.

I think it's safe to assume there is a fair amount of dysfunctional behavior in this family.

From April 2015:

At age 12, Harveltz Beaubrun beat his 17-month-old cousin to death with a wooden baseball bat. Now, the 19-year-old man is accused in another bloody slaying — that of his 18-year-old girlfriend...

In July 2008, Beaubrun pleaded no contest to second-degree murder in Broward County juvenile court for the murder of his cousin Shaloh Joseph. Under the terms of the plea deal, he was sentenced to 18 months in a therapeutic treatment program for boys, followed by probation until he turned 21.
