I read the comments that people on this article. It was commented that AMW was replaced by a ball game. It this was info the police felt was valuable, why didn't they release it when AMW was no shown?
If this really is considered important, then what the heck!!!
Is it possible the book bag & lunch box was personalized for her instead of having that design on them when they were bought .
Kewpiedoll, I just looked at your link-purposely glanced at it and then looked away-not to excuse my error of last night, but w/the split seconds that the items were shown on AMW, and w/the bow on top of the skull, it STILL looked like ears to me, and almost like the Hello Kitty I thought it was.
I believe what Somer's dad said about soot. I don't think he was to release that information....I was a little taken back when he answers some of the questions on NG.

SO-makes me sort of think that this was a knock-off, an off brand of some sort.
I still wonder who would put a skull and crossbones on a little girl's book bag. Makes me wince.
There's a mall store here where I live that sells a lot of garments and accessories with skulls and hearts - my youngest daughter refers to them as "Emo" style (as in "emotional", not the Sesame Street puppet). The "girly skull" designs are very popular with the middle school girls.
I'll take a peek at their website to see if they have any items similar to Somer's.
The fact that her bags are still missing indicates she still had them with her when she was taken, but that they were disposed of in another location, since LE searched the garbage as it was being dumped at the landfill. They continued searching the garbage even after they found her body in the hopes of pinpointing the location the garbage came from. If the bags had been disposed of with her, they would have found them, wouldn't they?
OK. Obviously I'm out of the loop. With 13 grandkids from 19 to <1, you wouldn't think that was possible, but this is one trend I've missed, and you know what? I'm really not sorry.I know doggies... but it is very popular.. make it pink so its all dolled up for little girls.. I see the skull and cross bones on so many items in the store.. heck I went to get my little doggies new winter sweaters this week-end and guess what was on them??? yep.. skull and cross bones.. for boy doggies it was in gray and black.. for my little girl doggie it was in fall multi color...
I don't know if the goth look started this popular fad or whom.. but it is all over on everything...
