Keeping the public interested and alert is paramount when the murderer hasn't been found - and who else can do that, if not, the family?

I don't know unless the Sheriff's office gave local press conferences along with the family and other stations could pick it up. After a few months all these shows lose interest anyway unless it becomes a circus type thing as with Caylee and Haleigh.
