sadnpod-any chance if you can look at the OPAA bathroom and see if there is a false ceiling? I'm kind of thinking "no" for a public restroom, but honestly, I've never looked at the ceiling of one. I would think it would have to be something that could be more easily washed and not damaged. IMO

Dog attack-wouldn't someone hear the screaming? And, why would they be looking at the Gano house, then? So, I can't buy the dog. Sorry.

Bold is mine
I think they went there on Thursday ...

Investigators left the abandoned house around 1 a.m. Friday, but it remained a crime scene with 24-hour police protection.

Sorry. Have to clarify. I didn't mean the house. I meant the command center at OPAA the first night that she was missing? How long was it the command center? All night or did LE leave at some point?

Three police officers are on each end of the house and crime scene tape still keeps everyone away. Gano Avenue, a major roadway through this neighborhood, is still blocked off, with a FDLE unit parked in the street.

Maybe this is the media's interpretation of the tape, maybe it did say Crime Scene. IDK.

Back again to the heavy equipment and digging. Any ideas on what? Sounds like they dug in the yard. Looking for the weapon?

Knife, crowbar, 2x4?

[snipped...]Evidence has been transported from the house on Gano and the landfill to labs run by the CCSO, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in Jacksonville, and the Medical Examiners Office in Savannah are all being used for analysis

[snipped from further down...]Investigators left the abandoned house around 1 a.m. Friday, but it remained a crime scene with 24-hour police protection.

[snipped...] The vacant house near the last place Somer was seen in Orange Park is considered a crime scene. Detectives have been seen digging through trash.

Does anyone know how long they keep crime scene tape up if it was the murder house?

I will try to find proof but my hallucinations say they were there through the night from Monday until Wednesday. I remember talk about the darkness hindering their search efforts.

When I posed the question "What kinds of fatal injuries are obvious to the naked eye?" I was asking a rhetorical question.

But I'm glad there were some responses - and I hope it generates some thought about how Somer might have been killed.

LE announced her death a homicide very soon after they recovered her poor little body from the landfill.

Her injuries must have been obvious and must have left no doubt in LE's mind that she was murdered.

This might also be a reason family members were discouraged from viewing her.

The manner in which she died has been disclosed by LE - homicide. But, as posters here have stated, there are several methods related to that manner in which she could have been killed, and for some reason, LE doesn't even want family members to know what those particular methods might have been.

I'd assume they would keep it up until they were positive they had every piece of evidence that they needed. In some cases the home is released after a week, in others it could be much longer. IIRC in the Rowan Ford case, the crime scene wasn't released until a month or so later..

97.3 The Sky has learned that Texas EquuSearch will begin a search for Somer Renee Thompson, age 7, on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, at 8:00 a.m. The Command Center will be located at Orange Park Athletic Association, 1086 Fromhart St., Orange Park, FL 32073. The website for the park is www.opaa.us.

Certainly until Somer was found they would have kept someone there? Wouldn't they?

This was on a blog, and on another site I found the same thing with the source listed as the EquuSearch website but I didn't actually find this paragraph on the Equusearch website.

I've been thinking about cause of death or the state of the body, and comparing to some other cases. JonBenet was bludgeoned and strangled, yet she was able to be seen. I once attended the funeral of two schoolmates of my kids years ago. They died in a house fire after being left home alone (mom was off at a bar boozing) and they had an open casket. If decomposition hadn't made it hard to see the body, something really bad must have been done to the face that the funeral home couldn't even correct enough to have a viewing. Maybe she was badly beaten.

"I fear for our community until we bring this person in. This is a heinous crime that's been committed," Beseler said. "And we're going to work as hard as we can to make this community safe."

You're probably right;Or maybe her throat was slashed!!

It is possible, however, that could be covered. While I was attending HS, a dear friend of mine has a serious bout of depression and took his own life. To make a long story short, he hung himself. At the funeral there was an open casket and he simply had a turtle neck on. I believe the same could have been done for Somer if there was that sort of injury, the can patch and cover wounds with different putties and make up.

And unless her face was too badly injured to identify her that way, they could have simply left the sheet up to her chin.

Sorry if this is graphic.. :(

Perhaps they didn't want an open casket so the cause of death would not be noticeable and used the excuse of not wanting that to be the last visual memory of Somer.

I thought I'd read that CCSO had requested that the casket be closed and I was surprised.

ETA
Perhaps the reason was decomposition.

Somer’s casket was closed for the viewing and it was recommended her mother not view her daughter. Thompson has a lock of her daughter’s hair. (My note: Not at this point.)

“It just probably was better to keep the memory of her alive the last time she saw her rather than her present condition,” Beseler said. “It’s just a recommendation. You’ve got to remember she was in a landfill for a couple of days.”

If they had lied to the family, that would be horrific. And as far as I know, you would not be able to stop an immediate family member from viewing someone at the funeral home, whether it was a request from LE or not. I would want to make sure of things myself if it came to that.

Thank you txsvicki - I know that wasn't easy for you to say.

This is such a heart wrenching case.

Sounds like the face could not be fixed, then.

It could be the Gano house was the murder house, then.

Are the workers working on it now?

I still like GCV as a candidate. I know he is only a Romeo and Juliet SO according to brother. But the guy that just did all of those rapes in Jacksonville a couple of days ago started as Romeo and Juliet SO.

The sister said that he had not worked there ever. But brother owner said that he had worked there and went to a different job a couple of months ago.

The forensic astrologers said that a woman wasn't involved in the crime, I believe, but was involved by covering up or something. Can't remember. Then there was the false alibi that the forensic astrologers said that the perp had. I don't know if he was asked to give DNA. Don't know if he has DNA on file. Would he?

He may not have DNA on file because I know the labs have screwed it up royally from a case recently in Milwaukee.

At the request of investigators, the casket was closed at a viewing Monday evening at First Baptist Church of Orange Park.

Memorial held for Somer

The bold is mine. I didn't realize that investigators had requested this. I would think the funeral home would suggest it or the family would request it ... but investigators?

There is something they don't want us to see?
