UPDATE: Two human skulls found near Lake Jackson, Leon County Sheriff’s Office says

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office says two human skulls were found after it was alerted about human remains near Lake Jackson Sunday afternoon. According to deputies, the sheriff’s office had to do a flyover to find the remains.

A retired Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission expert tells WCTV the lake ebbs and flows, and most of the sinkhole was dry this weekend. The expert says this is the driest Lake Jackson has been since 2006.

LCSO says that’s how witnesses were able to notice the remains off of Faulk Road around 2 p.m. Sunday.

LCSO confirmed the remains were human Sunday, and promptly handed the investigation over to its violent crimes unit.

UPDATE: 2 skulls found in Lake Jackson an ‘archaeological find’ according to Leon County deputies

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office says the two human skulls that were found in Lake Jackson on June 6 are believed to be “an archaeological find and of historical origin.”

LCSO Public Information Officer Shade McMillian confirmed to WCTV the skulls are no longer connected to a criminal investigation.

McMillian says any other information regarding the skulls has to come from the Florida Department of State’s Division of Historical Resources.

Ooh, that's interesting. Glad it's not another case for us to follow. I'm a bit overwhelmed with murdering lowlifes right now.

I'm familiar with the area and there is a state park a short distance away with Native American earthen mounds within a short distance downstream. I'd venture to say it's within a mile if going through the lake.

That would be really cool for them to do genetic genealogy on the remains. Even if there are no decedents around, what a fascinating case study that would be.

Very recently deceased people of Native American descent are already very tough to identify via genetic genealogy, let alone historical burials.
I am an archeologist and of course it would be cool to find out more, but i doubt we would have a lot of luck. If we get useable DNA from an archeological find at all.
