FL- Vegan parents charged after starving their baby by switching formula

  • #21
Since the doctor prescribed formula that would have suited their vegan beliefs I suspect there are different reasons why this poor baby was starved. I wonder if drugs are involved and an accompanying lethargy to care properly for the little one.

Or just another male showing his domination and control over the household by asserting he knows better than the doctor.

Snip... Perhaps the baby cannot, or should not, be exposed to any bodily fluids?

Snip... She may have been prescribed a drug that prevents her from breastfeeding. Snip...

It does make me wonder. Whether it could be prescription drugs, as mentioned by 'Laughing', or some other drugs... that the mom knew not to expose her child to...? Hence my bodily fluids remark...

I just pray that this child recovers fully, and can live a life with more responsible caregivers :)

How many children have to suffer before parents understand that a vegan diet requires research and listening to the recommendations of professionals? Doctors aren't out to hurt children.

Trying to find what the outcome of this case was. Nada.

The baby went to the State.

Hoping the darling didn't suffer long term problems.

Why was she not breast feeding?
Ab.so.lute.ly. What could be more vegan than a vegan mom feeding her starving child?

I remember, years ago in 1998, before I discovered WS, a similar situation with a near-starving baby who was almost two years old -- his parents were feeding him only celery and watermelon. He wound up in the emergency room, and they would up in jail.
WTH gets into these ~parents~?

Julia French
Robert Buskey

According to search results I think the case was dismissed on October 26, 2020 after the prosecutor issued a statement of nolle prosequi (We will no longer prosecute).

One odd bit is that apparently Buskey had a notice to appear on January 15, 2021 for something called a Docket Sounding. The notice was filed on October 16, 2020. It was undeliverable. There was also an earlier one.

It kind of looks like the people may have moved without giving a forwarding address. I'm unsure of exactly what it all means so I'll let one of our attorneys explain it to us. o_O

Regarding the above post, I was nosing through the many documents and came across a letter from Buskey dated September 24, 2020 to an attorney.

In the letter he says:
My son is back home and is doing way better out of the states (sic) hands and hes (sic) set up for more appointments the state never got done the whole 1.7 years they had him.

Ugh. In other docs the description of the baby's condition is heartbreaking. The ER doctor also mentioned that he could suffer heart problems in the future due to the starvation.

Oh wow. I’m so glad they got this baby out of there.

I thought this was going to be about the singer who was giving her 2 month old baby ground hemp seeds, honey & mushrooms.
She was trending on Twitter last week. Her baby’s legs looked like sticks.
People said they reported her.

If the baby really is back with the parents then I hope CPS are keeping a close eye on them to make sure this doesn't happen again. They could have permanently damaged the poor wee guy.

Case "disposed by prosecutor". Great.

Couple free to go about their business. I hope they don't have another child to put through hell like this.

Thanks for starting the thread, Joe.

Disposed? Good Lord.

Just a point. Vegan does not equal starving your infant. Concubine of the loop found her recipe on line. He seemed a cocky one.

What in Lord's name is going on in this world?

Can only hope this baby is being checked on by SOMEONE!

Cranky old teacher here -- can we mark the grammatical & syntax errors in that guy's draft version of that letter, and assign a due date for his first revision???

Then return to discussing parenting....

@Laughing are you sure you're not Sister Stella Gabriel in disguise? Our fourth grade English Nun.

Please go mark his paper with a bunch of red pencil with circles and checks. Be really cranky and make him have the revised version in by Monday signed by a parent or guardian.

In many ways teaching is tougher than parenting. Actually a teacher does both. JMHO

Again hoping the baby is fed well.

What do you call a private nun?

Perhaps Mr. Buskey should meet the Mother Superior from The Blues Brothers?

Thanks for going with us on this ecclesiastical detour, praying that the little guy is doing very well!

It's possible she couldn't. Some vegans (yes, not all or even most, before vegans jump down my throat) aren't very healthy and she might have been nutrient deficient to the extent that she wasn't producing milk. She may have not produced enough milk unrelated to her diet, as some women just can't breastfeed. Or she might not have thought it ethical. There's debate in the vegan community as to whether human breast milk is vegan or not. Most vegans will say it's fine, that there's no issue with breastfeeding, but some more extreme types disagree. Or she might just have not wanted to.

Poor baby. Why on earth did they think potato could sustain a baby, who needs a high fat high protein diet?

Just to augment your comment, in addition to problems with milk production, nursing vegan mothers may have nutrient-poor milk, insufficient for nourishing a child without supplementation.
