Thank you Betti. I can't imagine the frustration caused by the destroyed records on top of having to deal with this tragedy.

That's more then I knew about. I only knew of the one.

The only one I knew about was the NamUs UP#3037.

ETA: My mistake; the ring had four stones, not three. :(

Do you know if she wore any jewelry? I came across a Jane Doe with a mother's ring- it had a blue, a red, and a pink stone.
https://identifyus.org/en/cases/708

There was another that I've now lost the link too who had a pack of camel cigarettes in her possession.

(I haven't done much research with UIDs before- if there's a better place for me to post about this, I would be grateful if a more experienced sleuther could point me in that direction)

Websleuths has an Unidentified section and NamUs Case #708 has a thread here. The folks there are great at giving advice on possible matches, etc. so definitely check it out!

The only one I knew about was the NamUs UP#3037.

That's more then I knew about. I only knew of the one.

I think because several of the profiles have hundreds of exclusions, those were most likely done automatically by the system. Not 100% positive on how that works, though.

NamUs UP#4527 is the one that I contacted the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences two years ago on to see if a match had been done to Viola. CarlK90245 (a moderator in the Unidentified section and REALLY good at making matches) also suggested another missing person - Toni Esbenshade. Both Viola and Toni are now on the exclusions list for UP#4527.

@j123: Just saw that you commented on the thread for NamUs UP #708 and saw that folks were discussing Viola as a possibility back in 2013. Thanks for following up!

The UP in Ga. That I am trying to talk to the officer about is not the right age . I don't know if life style would age your body quicker. But if anyone wants to check it out it is at
Georgia. Gov/case/unidentified remans-287 .

I just found out like a month ago about having congenital malformation in my lower back. So when I talked to him the first time I didn't know.

It wasn't until I started searching again that I remembered what he told me. 1st time I was asking about a different case and he mentioned it to me.I couldn't remember which PD I had talked to about their UP. So I started calling PD's all over again Decided to look up UP's by state again. So waiting on that call back.

When we went to where
My sister was living they had thrown all her stuff out what wasn't taken was left outside all we found that was an old address book of hers every thing else was trashed. Nothing that was of any help.

Betti -
Why was your sister living in Iowa and how long? Where was your sister living (own home, apt complex, duplex?) and with whom? Who threw her stuff out? Did the landlord know anything?
Did Iowa LE start an investigation on their end at the time of your sister's disappearance? Are they working with you now?
None of Vi's friends or co workers didn't know anything about who she was traveling with or were those her "friends"? That was a major trip and undertaking. Unless I was trying to keep it a secret I would have told another friend where I was going.
Was there any evidence that your sister purchased a bus ticket to leave FL?
Mapquest shows the most direct route as IA MO IL KY TN GA FL, I guess that's where I'll start looking.

Another thought. As much as I try to help people in need I don't think I would be going across the country to help someone I was just casually acquainted with. As an adult most of my friends are from church, school, work, and childhood and I would add in other parents if I had children. Someone in one of those circles should have known something. I sorry its been so long.

MizKim I am going to try to answer your questions as you put them to me my sister came to Waterloo, Iowa because I lived there at the time my husband was in the military and we were stationed there. We were stationed in Florida shortly after that most of my family lived in Florida at that time she left Bruton Minnesota and her boyfriend due to abuse and came to Waterloo she was only there maybe six to seven months and she lived in an apartment no idea if she was living with anybody at the at the time I don't know anything about the landlord and I don't know who removed her items from the apartment but I am assuming it was the landlord no one ever came forward as far as I know to see who her friends were I do not know if she purchased the bus ticket no one told me and Daytona Beach Police Department lost all the missing persons file on her my sister came to Iowa with help from friends when she was abused and with my family we always try to pay it forward so I understand why she would help someone in the same situation thanks for all your questions they have helped me to figure out with whom to ask these questions I will be calling Waterloo, Black Hawk County Sheriff's Department Police department and Health and Human Services and see if they will tell me anything thank you again for all your help and helping me to find my sister

Another thing, Betti, is if your family is comfortable with it - trying to drum up some local media attention to get more information.

Local media in the Waterloo, IA region seem willing to cover cold case stories (see below) and I think one about a woman helping another escape an abusive relationship, only to disappear and leave behind three children is compelling. You can see local news examples (and perhaps find contacts through the websites) here:

It would probably be good to keep an organized timeline of events and facts that you know, plus notes on any rumors or possibilities. That way, Viola's story and your family's search for her is ready for coverage at any time.

To echo MzKim, I am also sorry it has been so long and hope you find answers.

Betti, this is a long shot but ask the Sheriff's office if they have any records of a domestic disturbance at your sister lived in the apartments where maybe she called in the incident or the victim called from her apartment or the victim went to stay with a neighbor "Viola".

Maybe your sister tried to help even before they left Iowa and there's a record there of who it was.

  • #37
Maybe you can trace back who owned the apartments by county real estate records and dig up a name for a landlord?

  • #38
my sister came to Iowa with help from friends when she was abused and with my family we always try to pay it forward so I understand why she would help someone in the same situation
I understand why perfectly now.

I'm hoping that some of my questions will help you look at things from a different angle and find some new leads.

Betti,

one more thing if the family hasn't done so and are comfortable with it make a missing facebook page for Viola with the local crime stopper info and if you still any friends in Iowa try to get them to share it on their pages. I would also post the same thing in the Waterloo forum on topix.

Tifflee ideas about the media are great.
