The 4-minute video, apparently taken from officers’ body cameras, shows the cops arresting the men by surprise as they shopped at grocery stores, sat in their cars in parking lots and took smoke breaks prior to the illicit meetups.
Undercover cops posed as teenagers and engaged the men in online conversations, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood told reporters Tuesday, according to the Daytona Beach News-Journal.
“As a result, a rendezvous was scheduled and we arrested these 11 scumbags,” Chitwood said.
One of them — 20-year-old Jamaican national Michail Hackett — claimed he didn’t know it was illegal to have sex with a 14-year-old in the US. He had just gotten a speeding ticket from the Sanford Police Department on his way to the “meeting,” for doing 69 mph in a 35-mph zone, cops said.
“[He] was in such a hurry to meet us that he got a speeding ticket on his way here,” Chitwood said, according to the News-Journal.
Another suspect, Kumar Speicher, 41, of Jacksonville, was sitting next to his pregnant wife as he sent explicit messages to a 14-year-old, according to Chitwood.
“I can show u so much and show u how a man treats a woman,” 37-year-old Gregory Webley allegedly sent to cops, believing he was speaking to a minor.
Each man was busted on at least one felony charge, including using a computer to lure a child, traveling to seduce/solicit/lure/entice a child, attempted lewd or lascivious battery and using a two-way communications device to commit a felony, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities confiscated a gun, a knife, condoms and sex toys from the men.
“It makes you want to throw up, to listen to what these guys are requesting a 14-year-old perform on them, and what they want to perform on a 14-year-old,” Chitwood said.
