Circumstances of Recovery: The wife of a Lake County deputy was driving along State Road 44 in Lake County, roughly 2 miles west of the St. Johns River, on November 6, 1981, when she saw a dog gnawing on an object. She pulled over to investigate and found the left leg of a man which had been severed near the knee. A torn green plastic garbage bag was found near the leg, which police believe was used to dispose of the leg.
A little over a week later, on November 14, a dog dragged a severed right leg from Spruce Creek into a backyard off Turnbill Bay Road in New Smyrna Beach. Volusia sheriff's deputies responded and began searching the grassy shoulders along SR 44 from DeLand to New Smyrna Beach for additional remains. River patrols also searched the banks of Spruce Creek, but no additional remains were recovered.
Police believe the legs are from the same individual. Both legs had been severed at the knee, apparently with a saw. Police believe the legs were likely thrown from a vehicle over bridges at Interstate 95 or U.S. Highway 1.

"Deputies find leg near river," Orlando Sentinel, 10 November 1981, 2L.
The leg was found next to a torn green plastic garbage bag; deputies theorize the leg was inside the bag and that it split open when it was tossed from a moving vehicle.
"2nd leg found in Volusia County," Orlando Sentinel, 14 November 1981, 2C.
Initial descriptions match reports of a left leg discovered one week ago in Lake County off State Road 44 near the Volusia County line. Both legs were severed at the knee, apparently by a saw, according to reports. Police reports said the leg found Friday is assumed to be from the same individual as the leg discovered in Lake County.

On Monday, Volusia sheriff's deputies scoured the grassy shoulders along State Road 44 from DeLand to New Smyrna Beach looking for other remains. In New Smyrna Beach, river patrols were searching the banks of Spruce Creek, from which a dog dragged a man's right leg on Friday.
Investigators said the leg is assumed to be from the same person whose left leg was discovered Nov. 6 in Lake County. The severed limb was found off S.R. 44 near the Volusia County line. Both legs were severed near the knee and appear to be from a white male, age 20 to 40 years, officials said.
"We've got a leg but we haven't found anything else," said Volusia Investigator Randy Burnsed. "Chances are, there might be other parts in the county."
Burnsed said the limb discovered Friday probably was thrown into the creek from bridges at Interstate 95 or U.S. Highway 1. Officials said it was discovered when a dog dragged the decomposed limb into a yard off Turnbull Bay Road.
A week before, a left leg, also severed at the knee, was discovered by the wife of a Lake County deputy. She spotted a dog gnawing on an object as she was driving along S.R. 44 about 2 miles west of the St. Johns River and stopped to investigate.
Lake County officials also discovered a green plastic bag nearby, which they think contained the leg before the dog tore into it. They said the leg appeared to have been severed about 24-36 hours before it was found.
