mz iz first im sorry about your situation with your son :(

but why do you think that situation applies here? and even if he is 'predisposed to violence' how does that make it alright?

we all make choices......he made the wrong ones

there is no personal responsibility anymore, someone (or somethingelse) is always to blame.

baby's moms let the dad/step dad/boyfriend beat there kid to death while they turn up the stereo in the other room, she'll probably blame the dad and say they were abused too.

when does it end? people need to be held accountable for theyre actions.

what this young man did to the victim was not an act of insanity. He was mad and almost killed her. Depression over his brother's suicide does not excuse his behavior. Nothing excuses his behavior. He acted like a mad dog and needs to be tried as an adult and be held accountable for his actions. NO EXCUSES !!!!!!!!!!

just look at the expression on his face, especially in the first picture. He isn't sorry for anything. He looks so full of hate, like he's ready to take up where he left off.

This is one scary person. Can't call him a man, and sure can't call him a boy. He may be beyond repair. And I'm afraid that Josie is beyond repair, too.

Prayers for Josie and her family. May right be done in this case.

Josie is young and I think she has a strong will to live. I am holding out hope that she will recover from this beating. My BF has a son that was critically injured in an auto mobile accident when he was 20 yrs old. On impact he was ejected from the car and throw about 30 or 40 ft into the air and landed on his head on the asphalt suffering severe head trauma. They had to remove a portion of his skull to allow for the brain swelling and he was put into a medically induced coma just like Josie. After 10 days in the coma they woke him up. He had a very long recovery period but today he is fully functional with no permanent brain damage but has absolutely no memory of the accident. I think there is hope and I am praying for the same outcome for Josie.

That is remarkable and he is a very blessed young man indeed. I like you pray for the same outcome for Josie.

The 15-year-old Deerfield Beach girl allegedly beaten by another teen over a text message remained in critical condition Saturday.

Josie Lou Ratley was in a drug-induced coma at Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, according to Rick Freedman, her family's attorney. Ratley went through a second surgery on Friday.

``Every day, we wait and we hope,'' Freedman said.

Freedman added that Ratley's mother, Hilda Gotay Ratley, has been amazed at the outpouring of support, from donations to help with medical care to caring phone calls.

"Understanding" and "compassion", at least in my book, does not mean the punishment should be LESS.

Missizzy understands and has compassion for her son, and therefore, can extend that compassion to other severely disturbed people. I don't see her calling the bad behavior "OK" simply because she also sees the societal dilemma beneath it.

I think our judicial system errs a lot on the side of mitigating circumstances when it comes to sentencing time. Too much of the time, in my opinion.

But I'd rather live in a society that errs on the side of mercy, overall. Letting pedos and pervs and murderers go with a slap on the wrist is the price we pay for a more merciful world. I don't like it, I think it needs MUCH work, there are crimes that "mercy" should not apply to. Brain damaging a young girl for life is one of them. I too see the boy's dilemma, that in many ways he is a victim, too, but at the same time I do NOT want him freed after a couple of years in juvie. He's demonstrated how he deals with his rage and pain, and he's not likely to change BECAUSE his wiring is damaged.

Victims who are so destructive have made themselves a place along with the perps. The victim card should be forfeit when you, in your rage and pain, reach out and destroy another person's life. It should not mitigate your sentence.

The mothers who turn up the music while the boy friend beats her child chose to do that to protect HERSELF. Domestic violence does that to a person. If you haven't been in an abusive relationship it is very, very hard to understand. I have, and have selfishly chosen destructive choices to save my 🤬🤬🤬 from more abuse. I know what it's like to do that. But I consider myself JUST as guilty as if I were a natural creep. My "victim card" means squat to me, and so everyone else's does too. Abused mothers, abused children, whoever, should not be exempt from suffering the consequences of their behavior. Ever. How else will people LEARN, if we are excusing them from the price of their behavior? We are robbing them of the only thing that will teach them to make BETTER choices.

And if they can't make better choices, because they are so damaged, then it's sad but lock them up so they can't breed or destroy another person's life. It's a cruel world.

The more merciful world would be the one where parents aren't afraid their children going to be beat up or molested. Letting "pedos and pervs and murderers go with a slap on the wrist" doesn't fit into that at all.
Jeez.

this 🤬🤬🤬 showed no mercy to this girl, if they hadnt pulled him off her, she'd be dead already. when courts show 'mercy' we have garbage like gardner and garrido who then go out and commit more horrific crimes.

this guy already made his choices, im sorry i dont get this point of view, and no offense, mz iz or anyone who disagrees, but i never will. too many people are being murdered or raped or kidnapped simply cause courts 'showed mercy.

everything can be used as a mitigating circumstance. not getting a pony for your 5th birthday could cause you to shoot horses....

Mercy should go both ways. People like this kid and any other loser shouldn't have a drop of mercy cause they don't have any for anyone else. I say to anyone that wants to show a violent criminal mercy have them come to your house, sit at your table, eat your food, share a room with your kids.....better yet, leave them alone to babysit your kids....yep, mercy talk would stop real quick.

If you and I got to make the final decision on how to punish this kid, I believe we'd come to the same conclusion. I'm not sure what point of view you mean when you say "I don't get it". You and I both want the kid locked up.

A more merciful world would include wrongly placed mercy, yes. I like jjenny's "mercy" solution, looking past the short term into a longer term mercy. I think we have a ways to go there.

I've been watching the news and the paper all weekend. I guess no news is good news.

I did come across this tonight:

Car Wash Raises Funds For Deerfield Beach Teen
Mar 21, 2010 9:16 pm US/Eastern

DEERFIELD BEACH (CBS4) ―

Several students from Deerfield Beach Middle School held a car wash Sunday morning to help raise money for their classmate Josie Lou Ratley who was beaten while waiting for her school bus to go home.

The 15-year-old girl remains in critical condition after her alleged attacker 15-year-old Wayne Treacy faces a premeditated attempted first-degree murder charge. His girlfriend 13-year-old Kayla Manson was also arrested and charged with accessory to attempted first-degree murder because she allegedly helped Treacy find Ratley. The attack occurred March 17th

Medical personnel treating Josie Lou Ratley -- the 15-year-old Deerfield Beach girl beaten by a teen boy last week -- on Sunday removed her bandages, exposing rows of stitches from two surgeries to relieve pressure on the girl's brain.

She remained in critical condition and in a medically induced coma at Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, according to Rick Freedman, her family's attorney.

Doctors are ``really feeling good about the strength of the rest of her body,'' Freedman said. ``Now it's a matter of waiting.'' Josie's family remains by her bedside.

Josie's mom and aunt were just on the Today Show. They showed pictures of her.

It's devastating. Her poor face and head. It's just awful. And her mom is just devastated.

I can't stop crying. My heart is bleeding for this poor girl and her mom who loves her so much and is so worried.
