It's so great to hear news that she is coming along and getting ready to go home! Her mom must be so excited and scared at the same time. I hope they continue to have the total support of the community as she continues on her journey back to health.

May 19, 2010 8:39 am US/Eastern

On Wednesday, Domnick and Ratley's mother Hilda Gotay, will hold a news conference to give an update on Josie's progress.

Over the last three weeks Josie has been re-learning to talk, to eat, to use her arms, etc. In a written statement, Domnick said her long-term prognosis is still unknown and could take years to determine her prognosis for a full recovery.

Josie Ratley Slowly Recovering: Mom
Teen beating victim still can't perform basic functions
Updated 1:15 PM EDT, Wed, May 19, 2010

The mother of Josie Lou Ratley said her teen daughter who was nearly beaten to death just two months ago is making progress but it's slow going.

Hilda Gotay, mother of the 15-year-old Deerfield Beach girl, spoke during a news conference Wednesday, saying her daughter still can't perform basic tasks on her own.

"There's a lot of things she still doesn't know how to do," said a tearful Gotay. "She's recovering very slowly."

Gotay said Ratley, who suffered severe brain damage in the March 17 attack, can't read or write, only speaks certain words, and doesn't recognize colors or know her ABCs.

Deerfield beating victim Josie Lou Ratley has 'a long, long road ahead,' mother says
15-year-old remains at undisclosed rehabilitation facility

This is a two page article

Brain damaged and still trying to relearn basic motor skills, Josie Lou Ratley recently looked at a poster-sized drawing she drew months ago and pointed at it.

"I remember," she said.

Bless you, Josie. You're doing great, honey. You're a brave, brave girl.

The scene, described by Ratley's mother at a news conference late Wednesday morning, was one of the more promising signs of progress for the 15-year-old Deefield Beach Middle School student who was nearly beaten to death on March 17.

Ratley will soon be going home from the rehabilitation center where she's been since late April, relearning the things most people take for granted. Knowing the alphabet. Handling a toothbrush. Putting on clothes. Walking unaided. Even using the bathroom.

Bless you, Josie. You're doing great, honey. You're a brave, brave girl.

Great to hear the news of her progress!

But it is a drag about this news at the end of the article:

"Her family desperately needs basic medical supplies, educational items, and a new home that gives them more space for a child whose primary forms of transportation are now a wheelchair and a walker," said Sanders.

(snip)

Donations that were made to the account set up by Gotay's previous lawyer can only be used for medical and related expenses, but most of Ratley's bills to date have been covered by Medicaid."

No wonder her mom fired the attorney and got a new one!

Here's "new" news - seems the text in question wasn't THAT bad.

Text message that prompted Deerfield beating 'wasn't that bad,' suspect told detective
Prelude to Wayne Treacy's confession released

By Rafael A. Olmeda, Sun Sentinel

10:22 a.m. EDT, May 20, 2010

The text message that sent Wayne Treacy into a violent rage two months ago that ended with the severe beating of a Deerfield Beach Middle School student was not that big a deal, the suspect told a detective a short time after the incident.

Treacy, 15, told the Broward Sheriff's detective questioning him on March 17 that he went into a rage he couldn't control after receiving a text message from Josie Lou Ratley that made a reference to Treacy's brother, who committed suicide last October.

"It had to be pretty bad for you to get so angry," the detective said.

"It wasn't that bad," Treacy responded, describing the text. "It's just that it's my dead brother."

video link is up now on the above story - same link as above. After watching this video there is no way IMO that Treacy will be able to mount any type of "mental defect" defense.

I'm willing to bet this kid pleas out - when he should actually fry!!!!!

Continued prayers for our Josie girl. Thanks to all who posted the updates about her progress. There isn't a day goes by I don't think of her.

'it wasnt that bad, but any excuse i need to be a psycho works for me' in other words.

It's unfortunate, and a younger me would never have believed what I am about to say, but I think sometimes there just isn't anything we can do to "fix" these monsters. I am so angry that this was allowed to happen. I want this kid locked up forever, no excuses. Anytime I try to think of alternatives, I also have to ask myself: what if a child of mine would have to be in the same class with him? What if he started dating my daughter?! Is that a chance I want to take? No way. This kid is a monster and he's not fit to participate in society. It sucks that he drew the crummy, excuse-making, responsibility-shirking set of parents that he did, but I just don't know what else to do. This guy is a murderer. She lived, by her own strength and the very grace of God, but he'll always be a murderer in my eyes. So sad. :( :tsktsk:

Reading through the text messages brings more questions into my mind about who had the phone and when.

In the beginning it sounds like he thinks he is talking to his girlfriend and threatening her. Then Josie comes back and says he doesn't know who he is talking to because it is her, not the girlfriend. Then it seems like the girlfriend got access to another phone and was talking to Treacy telling him it was Josie that had the other phone that she had been using. She identified her by name. He then told his girlfriend to meet him at the bus loop. We know what happened after that.

Knowing how phones store text messages we either don't have the beginning of the conversation or else the supposed message that set him off has been deleted or was not received as a text message and therefore would not be in this group. Since the message is there about him not knowing that it was Josie that he was texting, doesn't it seem likely that the supposed message that set him off would have come after she identified herself since he was obviously blaming her for it?

Also wouldn't Josie need to have his email address if she sent him a message from her email address. (Sorry not real up on the whole texting thing). Can you send a text message via email directly to someone's phone or would it have to go to his email address which he could then check through his phone? Not sure how that works! Perhaps someone more knowledgeable that me about texting can answer this.

Just watched the video of Treacy saying the text wasn't that bad. He sounds completely sane to me.

Don't know why but the video really burns my butt! And the idea that Josie is being released because Medicaid will no longer pay for her care....makes me :furious:

This beautiful girl was an amazing artist, now she is having to relearn all her colors.

PS - I used initials in the title because this victim is a minor and will want to move past this in the future.

Prayers she continues to improve and justice is served.
