While searching for clues to the reported kidnapping of a woman, members of the Pasco County Sheriff's Office on Monday found the body of a man who appears to have been dead for a number of years.

[...]

Deputies searching in the kidnapping case came upon the skeleton about noon. It was 20 feet off Smith Road, which is half a mile south of State Road 54. The skeleton was that of an older black man who has been dead between two and five years, sheriff's spokesman Jon Powers said Monday. The skeleton is "totally unrelated" to the kidnapping report, he said.

There were no outward signs of foul play, according to a preliminary examination of the body Monday afternoon. Near the body were a red-and-blue sleeping bag, dark trousers, shoes and a couple of empty beer bottles, Powers said. More details about the body were not available, pending the report of the medical examiner.

On Sunday and Monday, deputies used helicopters, cruisers and footwork to search the area between Wesley Chapel and San Antonio that is roughly bounded by Boyette Road and County Road 577. About a dozen deputies were searching Monday when the man's body was found. The search was suspended shortly afterward.

A skeleton found in Wesley Chapel Monday is the remains of a white man between the ages of 45-60, the Pasco Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.

William Maples, a University of Florida forensics anthropologist, examined the bones, but could not determine a cause of death, sheriff's spokesman Jon Powers said.

Authorities initially believed the skeleton was that of a black male, but Maples identified the body as white.

The man died between two and five years ago and had broken his right arm sometime before his death, Powers said. He had multiple teeth missing and the remaining teeth were in poor condition.

The man was of medium build and about 5 feet, 8 inches tall. A variety of clothing was found with the skeleton, including black lace-up shoes, dark trousers, underwear, a T-shirt, Brittania suspenders and a silver Indian-style turquoise ring, Powers said.

The Sheriff's Office is searching its missing-persons files and those of neighboring counties in an effort to learn the man's identity, Powers said.

The skeleton was found off Smith Road a half-mile south of State Road 54 in Wesley Chapel. Deputies found the bones while searching a 24-square mile area between Wesley Chapel and San Antonio for a woman believed to have been kidnapped over the weekend.
