Westside High student boards bus after being shot in chest while walking to bus stop

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the 17-year-old student was walking to his bus stop around 6:15 a.m. when a black vehicle approached and opened fire, shooting the student once in the chest. Duval County School Board Member Scott Shine said the shooting happened near San Juan Avenue and Jammes Road.

A 17-year-old student from Westside High School was shot Wednesday morning while walking to his bus stop, and a school bus driver rushed him to a nearby fire station, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

“The bus driver made a split-second decision to transport him to the fire station you see behind me,” Janes said. “It was likely very important (that the driver did that). The immediate medical care that he got very likely saved his life.”

Janes said the teen, who was critically injured, was taken from the fire station on Tiny Tim Lane at Jammes Road to a hospital, where he was in surgery.

Westside High student shot, school bus driver transports him to fire station - News - The Florida Times-Union - Jacksonville, FL

A 17-year-old student was critically injured this morning after a drive-by shooting just before he boarded a bus full of Westside High School students, police said.

A few other students witnessed the shooting, which happened close to a senior center near San Juan Avenue and Jammes Road.

District officials said when police questioned students on the bus, two were uncooperative and one tried to take an officer’s Taser. That student was hit with the Taser outside the bus and taken to Baptist Medical Center to be checked out, said School Board member Scott Shine. The two were arrested.
