Police responded to the 4600 block of Germantown Avenue around 10:25 a.m. for a reported shooting. When they arrived they found the driver of a Route 23 SEPTA bus suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said the driver -- 48-year-old Bernard Gribbin -- had been shot six times in the chest and right abdomen. First responders took Gribbin to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:36 a.m.

SEPTA said Gribbin had been with the mass transit company for the past 12-years.

[Philadelphia Police Department] Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore said SEPTA police took a person of interest into custody on the 100 block of East Penn Street around noon Thursday, and that the woman “does fit the description” of the shooter from the bus. SEPTA Transit Police recognized her based on her distinct clothing and clear images of her face.

The woman, he said, did not have a gun in her possession when she was arrested. Police dogs and others are searching the area for the weapon, he said.

A 21-year-old Belmont woman who police say shot and killed a SEPTA bus driver in Germantown on Thursday morning is now facing a murder charge.

Zhontay Capers, of the 4300 block of Reno Street, was charged with murder and related crimes overnight in connection withthe fatal shooting of Bernard N. Gribbin, 48, a Route 23 SEPTA bus driver, said Interim First Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore.

“Literally, it occurs without apparent rhyme or reason. ... For some unknown reason, she began firing as she was exiting the bus.” The woman then reboarded, fired, and left the bus, said [SEPTA Transit Police Chief Charles] Lawson.

FYI: The 4300 block of Reno is in West Philly.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley reports through sources that police believe Capers could be the same person who was seen brandishing a gun at Erie Station [on the Broad Street Line] on Oct. 10.

[...]

Capers had two previous violent altercations as a juvenile on SEPTA property, according to Lawson.

[...]

Caper's family extended their condolences to the Gribbin family in a statement shared days after the homicide. The statement further discussed Zhontay's declining mental health that described the death of her grandmother as a "breaking point" that they said caused Zhontay to isolate herself from the family.
