PA - Josh Kruger, 39, community advocate and journalist, shot and killed at home - Philadelphia, 2 Oct 2023

Davis also charged in a shooting in a subway station in South Philadelphia.
Police said Davis was on the mezzanine level of the Tasker-Morris Station back on Sept. 25 at 6 a.m. when he bumped into a woman, leading to a brief altercation. Davis then allegedly pulled out a gun and fired before fleeing the scene. No one was injured during that incident.

New court documents obtained by Action News on Monday reveal a Philadelphia journalist was in an intimate relationship with the 19-year-old who is charged with his murder.

In those documents, police reveal they connected 19-year-old Robert Davis to the October 2 murder of 39-year-old Josh Kruger through texts and voicemails.

One of those voicemails was recorded three minutes before Kruger was fatally shot inside his Point Breeze home.

Kruger is heard telling someone at his door to "get out of here" and that "I'm tired of you being mean to me."

Police say the phone number that left the voicemail matches a number that belongs to Davis.

It makes me so sick when LGBTQ+ people are unfairly judged as being predators for simply being LGBTQ+, then you have someone that accidentally releases all the skeletons from their closet which makes it harder for all of the good people to get the respect of anyone who holds that unfair bias, or the seed of that unfair bias in their heart. There are just as many (if not more) priests... ministers... preachers... just saying that as a blanket statement

I empathize, but I would hold in very low esteem the opinion of someone who thinks the actions of any one of us represent all of us.

The 19-year-old man accused of fatally shooting local journalist and advocate Josh Kruger last fall is expected to plead guilty to murder and related crimes, attorneys said Tuesday.

Robert Davis appeared in court Tuesday morning for the first time since he was arrested in October and charged with killing Kruger, 39, on the steps of his Point Breeze home late one fall night.

Davis waived his right to a preliminary hearing, allowing the case to move forward.

PHILADELPHIA - The now 20-year-old man accused of shooting and killing Philadelphia journalist Josh Kruger will appear in court next week and is expected to plead guilty.

Robert Davis was charged with killing Kruger at his home in Point Breeze in October 2023.

Davis’ mother spoke out Wednesday and called on the evidence in this case to be made public, not just for her son’s sake.

[...]

Davis’ mother claims the relationship started when he was 15-years-old and involved drugs that she says he is still addicted to. She says she is concerned about other vulnerable children.

With a guilty plea, it’s possible those details will not ever be revealed publicly in court.

Davis pleaded guilty to third degree murder and was sentenced to 15 to 30 years in prison, according to court documents.

In addition to third degree murder, court documents show his charges for the incident also included aggravated assault, firearms not to be carried without a license and the possession of an instrument with the intent of the crime.
