PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Police say a woman shot and killed her husband and two daughters, and then tried to kill herself Monday night in the Tacony section of Philadelphia. Police were called to the home on the 6300 block of Hegerman Street around 10 p.m. after a next-door neighbor reported hearing gunshots.

Neighbors say they heard about five to seven shots ring out.

Police say the 28-year-old mother killed her 10-month-old and 4-year-old daughters. The woman’s 38-year-old husband was also shot and killed, according to police.

A Philadelphia mother is accused of killing her family before turning the gun on herself in an attempted murder-suicide.

On Monday evening, a family of four was shot in their home in Philadelphia’s Tacony neighborhood, according to a police department spokesperson. First responders arrived at the home at 10 p.m. and found 28-year-old Damyrra Jones lying outside on top of a gun while her two daughters, 10-month-old Damaya and Maxillie, 4, were found inside, along with their father, 38-year-old Max Alcindor.

They had been shot in the head.

The girls were alive and rushed to a local hospital, where they died, while Alcindor was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jones was hospitalized and remains in critical condition. On Tuesday, she was charged with three counts of murder.

It continues to astound me how many women are able to murder in cold blood their own innocent family, but fail in killing themselves.

She had no qualms about shooting her victims in the head. So why didn't she do the same to herself?

Imo, because most of these female killers are really cowards who don't want to die, and that is why many have failed attempts whether by firearm or using drugs, etc.

Im glad she survived, and will now face 3 capital murder charges.

Well hi there my beautiful treasured friend!

It's like all brutal ice cold murderers who have absolutely no hesitation in murdering their victims in the most barbaric ways. Yet if the DA threatens to apply the death penalty then the murderers fold like a cheap suit.

The same happens when deadly dangerous murderers are found guilty, and it then goes to the sentencing phase, they will beg, and plead for their own lives to be spared.

I think it’s no coincidence that these killers so often aren’t successful when it comes to killing themselves.

Without knowing where she shot herself and with what kind of weapon, it's not possible to say whether it was a serious attempt to kill herself or not. If she tried for example to shoot herself in the head with a small calibre gun, unless you know exactly how and where to aim to inflict most lethal damage, it's possible to survive a gunshot wound to the head with very little damage. There are several people who have survived a bullet in the head, for exaple Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in the U.S. and Nobel Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai in Pakistan.

I have no doubt she used the same lethal murder weapon she murdered her 2 innocent children, and husband by shooting them in the head. She already knew head shots would cause death. She already had 3 dead bodies laying there before her to prove it.

So she had already successfully murdered her three intended targets, and she knew if she did a head shot to herself it would be just as deadly final as it was for the three victims she had just murdered in cold blood.

It's no coincidence she decided instead she would shoot herself in another less lethal area of a more probability of survival.

Imo, She's just like so many other female murderers before her who fully succeeded in murdering their own family members, including their own children, but then does half attempts to commit suicide.

Perhaps it's easier to cause major damage to a brain shooting from the back, especially if done to a small child, than it is when you shoot oneself in the face or the temple? The bullet might be caught in non-lethal parts of the skull, or damage parts of the brain that are not so essential for life.

Why would she even care if she really wanted to commit suicide after already knowing it was totally sucessful when murdering two children, and one adult size man, who was the father of the two she had just murdered?

Did she care about her three victims she shot in the head before doing so?

She knew a suicide would be sucessful if she pressed the firearm against her temple, and pulled the trigger.

Imo, that's why she cowardly picked another area resulting in another failed attempt like so many of these female murderers have done in the past who really had no intentions of killing themselves.

Imo, they do so hoping to gain sympathy for the barbaric violent acts they cold bloodily have done to their victims.

Thank goodness jurors do not buy into the game they try to play.

She will be held fully accountable for all three murders.
