PA - Yatzirys Rodriguez, 2, beaten to death, Philadelphia, Mar 2021 *godmother/babysitter arrested*

This may not be allowed? There are emergency respite services available. I’d never heard of such a thing! I know these free services are available in many places - it was referenced in a Utah paper a few years ago, and I was curious if it existed elsewhere. I’ll add a Philly link below. It sounds like this service is available not just for short-term child placement, but last-minute care when the caregiver has a court date, medical appt, etc.

Now, I haven’t researched these emergency respite programs, but wow! What a great idea for a caregiver who doesn’t need the kids removed, but who may lack the funds for an emergency sitter. Kinda reminds me of diaper banks, and how it’s more than just diapering - the financial stress of pricey supplies can snowball into abuse.

Sham, you rock. I've never heard of this place. Never saw an advertisement on a bus or El.

Thank you so much.

The sad thing is if they're passing these kids around the child most likely has had some form of abuse. Then there goes the check. I mean child. Also probably an arrest.

What a God send though for Grandparents raising their Grands. Or anyone basically ensuring the safety of their kids.

I see it's in West Philly. Could mean a long trip by public transit for many. Still fabulous knowing it even exists!

Thank you immensely. I'll spread the word.

I first learned about them maybe 6-8yrs ago. Actually, could have been longer. It was tangentially mentioned in an article about something that happened in Utah. When I searched for them in Philly back then, there were several. I want to say that one was in Center City. I remember having to double-check that I was reading about respite for children, not pets - some of the language was similar to that of dedicated pet rescues! Something to the effect of “we are technically closed Christmas but we will provide immediate care if you call” and “ideally, we’d like info on the child before you drop off, but understand if you simply need immediate care.”

I’m sure covid has changed things.

1-800-THE KIDS is a 24/7 parenting help hotline. I think it’s out of NJ.

ETA: looking up her case was difficult because of her name. Being familiar with Hispanic names I anticipated this, yet the courts still threw me a curve because they had her first name and her last names transposed, i.e. Yaritza, Cirilo Fuentes. Looking up Smith's case first put me on the right track, because it also contains YCF's name and the way the court system rendered it.
