Details of Disappearance

Yansis was last seen by her sister, leaving her home in Miami, Florida on May 5, 2002. She said she was going to walk to a friend's home about a mile away, but never arrived there.

Yansis's relatives searched for her on their own before reporting her disappearance to the police five hours later. She left a note of farewell behind for her family, but her relatives did not discover the note until several days after her disappearance.

Authorities believe Yansis left of her own accord and may still be in the Miami area. There have been several sightings of her around Miami's Metro Rail train stations. She was affiliated with the gothic sub-culture in 2002 and frequently wore all black, gothic-type clothing and makeup.

She was born in the state of Leon in Nicaragua and she, her father and siblings emigrated to the United States under the sponsorship of her mother. Yansis was a student at Ponce de Leon Middle School at the time of her disappearance. Her case remains unsolved.

She would be 37 now. I hope she's out there and will contact law enforcement to let them know she is okay.

Excerpts from the following article, dated May 1, 2025:

On May 5, 2002, 15-year-old Yansis Juarez walked out of her home in Miami, Florida, and was never seen again. Two weeks later, the Juarez family found a letter in their mailbox, supposedly written by Yansis. It said she no longer wanted to live at home.

Now, 23 years later, Yansis is still missing. Her family says their lives have been filled with silence and unanswered questions.

Questions like: What happened to their beloved sister and daughter? Did she actually write that farewell letter, or was it placed in the mailbox by someone else?...

Around noon, Yansis told her sister she was heading to a friend’s house just a few blocks away to finish some schoolwork.

When Elda returned home from work later that afternoon, she called the friend’s mother to check in on Yansis, only to find out that she never arrived.

Panic set in immediately, and after hours of searching, there was still no sign of Yansis. Elda contacted law enforcement and reported Yansis missing...

And then, two weeks after the disappearance, her family discovered that note in their mailbox, supposedly from Yansis, saying she didn’t want to live at home anymore.

Yansis’ family says it felt suspicious and left them skeptical. “Anyone – I mean, anybody – could have dropped it off in there,” said Silggian. “Maybe it wasn’t even her.”

From this article we learn that the letter was received "two weeks" after Yansis disappeared, so around May 19.

The letter apparently did not contain any allusions to suicide, stating simply that "she no longer wanted to live at home," which could make sense if Yansis' family didn't approve of her Gothic lifestyle.

However, the family questions if Yansis or someone else dropped off the letter—which leads me to believe:

1. the letter may have been typewritten, since I assume the family would recognize Yansis' handwriting, or at least be able to say if a handwritten note was not her.

2. the letter may not have been mailed, since the family says "anybody could have dropped it off in there." If it was stamped and postmarked then only a postal worker could place it there. But if it was "dropped off" then my bet is someone from the surrounding area did it, because they could just walk by during the night, drop off the letter, and just walk away unnoticed.

Was Yansis' family able to confirm that she actually had made plans to visit her friend. If not, then maybe Yansis could've been using her friend as a cover to go somewhere else, and maybe that's where she ran into foul play.
