According to an affidavit, officers were called to Carolina Lake Drive on Jan. 1. Nelson told police that she was cooking dinner for her 14-year-old son Zakye, and when she went into his room, she found him unresponsive on the floor.

In a 911 call, the caller says they think "he just passed out or something."
The teen was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.

According to the affidavit, Nelson said she "dropped the ball" regarding getting Zakye medical attention but that he didn't want to see doctors. She said she is not a neglectful parent.

Investigators were able to obtain medical records from when Zakye was last seen by a doctor in June of 2020.

Notes from the visit state that he was "well-nourished, well-developed, in no apparent distress."

"He hasn't seen a doctor, she's claiming he had seen a doctor, but she can't tell us who," Flynt said.

Yeah right. Like that's what you tell 911 when you're calling for help for a child you clearly neglected.

"Nelson told police that she was cooking dinner for her 14-year-old son Zakye."

Daytona Beach police said their investigation, which included subpoenaing medical records, showed that Zayke Smith-Nelson, 14, was healthy when he was last checked in 2019 and 2020.

An autopsy on the 14-year-old was inconclusive but did reveal that the child was severely malnourished which caused loss of bone density. The teen had bedsores throughout his body, police said.

The Medical Examiner also reported that the child had fresh bruising to the right side of his eye and cheek. he had several linear scars across his torso and legs. He also had scars on his right hand and arm, detectives said.

Medical personnel indicated the scars on the torso and legs were consistent with being struck by a long flexible object.

Doctors also said that the teen appears to have not been able to move on his own over an extended period of time and would have been unable to make the marks on himself, the report states.

I’ve been trying to imagine a how a 14 year old boy weighing less than a medium sized dog would appear. It’s making me feel horrible. How could he even stand? Wouldn’t his legs just be so weak? How could she claim to be his mother?

WTH happened between 2020-2024? Even the poorest of people during Covid had the option of getting financial food assistance or visiting a food bank. No other family or friends noticed the poor boy??

Exactly! Was he enrolled in school at some point and then she took him out? How awful.

Goodness me. My son weighs more than this and he is 3. This poor boy, let's say his name, ZAYKE, where was his support system? Why was he left to suffer with this monster? Someone must have noticed his absence, and turned a blind eye. I hope he gets justice.

This one took my breath away.
At least this little 14 y/o is far away from that horror now.
Was there ever a father or boyfriend or friend around to notice this child? If so, did that person leave -- did "mom" start abusing him then?
Did anyone else abuse him? Did the boy ever go to school?
Grrrrr.

I'm thinking he couldn't. Per your first post:

"At 33 pounds, the kid probably couldn't even walk," Jimmie Flynt with Daytona Beach police said.
