We know there were no prints found on the batteries but how do we know they were wiped?

Excellent point, tumble. Batteries are often inserted with only their tops and bottoms being touched, so maybe no fingerprints get on the other parts of the batteries.
Who said that the batteries had actually been wiped? Crime lab technicians?

yes would love to also know what size that batteries were. obviously the bigger the battery size the more likelyhood it would yield a fingerprint.
