An Air India flight bound for London Gatwick carrying 242 passengers and crew has crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport in the northwestern Indian state of Gujarat.

Air India flight 171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, careened back to earth in the Meghani area of the city just minutes after leaving the runway shortly after 1pm local time.

Shocking images shared to social media showed a huge trail of smoke emanating from the crash site engulfed in flames.

The images coming out look awful.

I fear the death toll will be above the 242 mark as it has crashed into residential buildings

My son jumped from hostel's second floor as plane crashed' a mum says

Friends and family members outside hospitals in Ahmedabad have been speaking about the crash.

A mum named Ramila told news agency ANI that her son had just gone to the doctors' hostel for his lunch break when the plane crashed.

She said he jumped from the second floor of the building, suffering injuries, but is safe.

Boeing again - albeit apparently the first serious incident involving a dreamliner.

Of course the cause of the crash may turn out to be nothing to do with the plane itself, but at this stage one feels obliged to do a chinny-reckon.

'There were 53 Britons on board the Air India flight when it crashed, according to the airline and 169 are Indians, seven are Portuguese and one is Canadian.'

ATC confirmed a final “Mayday” call from the co-pilot before all contact was lost. The aircraft struck a doctors’ hostel near the airport, sparking a massive fire. Over 150 bodies have reportedly been recovered as investigations continue.

As a side note, as the airplane was making an ultra long distance flight, there would have been 3, or 4 pilots on board.

Pilots have rest requirements similar to truckers. On ultra long distance flights, the pilots rest in a mini cabin and rotate to the cockpit.

Ideally, the presence of an additional pilot(s) could increase the experience level of the crew. The accident, however, may of happened so fast that the presence of the additional pilots might not of mattered though.
