Flight to London Gatwick crashes at airport in India .June 12 th 2025

Air India flight from Ahmedabad to London has been cancelled due to a technical glitch, just days after Flight AI171 crashed shortly after take-off, leaving just one survivor from 242 people on board, including 53 Britons.

Air India Flight AI159 was suspended on Tuesday due to technical issues after arriving from New Delhi, CNN News18 reported this morning.

The jet, a B788 Boeing, had been due to take off from Ahmedabad in Gujarat at 1:10pm local time, arriving at London Gatwick airport at 6:25pm.

One thing that is confusing me, how did the only person who survived the crash keep his flip flops on? I can't get my head around that. Everything else I understand but flip flops staying on his feet just astonishes me. JMO MOO
He also had his phone in his hand. Where did he keep it during the crash?

I'm wondering if his part of the plane landed where there was an opening between two buildings (there are four buildings in a row). If he went through to the other side and then down the street towards the exit where he was first caught on video, he would have been shielded by the buildings.

I think in the video he emerged from behind the last building on the right:

Viswashkumar Ramesh, a British national, was seated in 11A, next to the emergency door on the left side of the aircraft. He said the plane broke apart shortly after take-off, and his seat was flung clear of the wreckage. As a result, he was shielded from the flames that engulfed the rest of the aircraft.

"The plane broke, and my seat came off," he told doctors treating him at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. "That is how I was saved."

Ramesh told doctors that he did not jump from the plane but was thrown out while still strapped to his seat when the aircraft disintegrated.

"The place where I landed was low... I took off the seat belt and for a moment, I was scared for my life. But I was near ground level, so I tried to get out," he told DD News.

UK response to Air India crash ‘disjointed and inadequate’, say grieving families

Family members waiting for repatriation of remains say government response has been ‘painfully slow’

I know they are understandably distraught but I don't think it's been painfully slow. It's literally only been days since the crash. These things take time. There's a lot of victims.
I do hope they all get the support and answers they need asap though.

I am not sure why they think it is the U.K governments responsibility.

"nvestigating authorities
will scan CCTV footage of the nearby area and speak with witnesses to get to the root cause of the crash.

Additionally,
the investigators will also
- study the pilot training records,
- total load of the aircraft,
- thrust issues related to the plane's engine,
as well as its worthiness in terms of past performances
and any previously reported issues."

Apparently one flight was also delayed (until they found a replacement) because of a pilot's panic attack.
I'm not surprised with this panic attack.
It must be hugely stressful for these pilots now - another accident is not far fetched

In response to heightened safety concerns, DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) confirmed that comprehensive surveillance of Air India’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet revealed no significant safety deviations.

The DGCA later tasked Air India to run new checks on its Dreamliner fleet. Of the 33 aircraft, 24 have cleared the inspection. Two aircraft are planned for completion on Tuesday, with one more scheduled for tomorrow.

The remaining six aircraft include two which are presently grounded in Delhi. The checks on these two will be carried out post-declaration of serviceability and prior to their return to service, DGCA said.

Two people that The American Prospect said were “deeply familiar with the Charleston 787 plant” told the publication they had grave concerns about the quality of 787s sent specifically to Air India.

Cynthia Kitchens, who worked at Boeing between 2009 and 2016, kept extensive notes and photos on what she called the “nonconformances” that haunted her. Of 11 particularly worrying planes she tracked, six went to Air India.

Former quality managers described a culture where warnings were ignored, flaws were hidden, and dangerous debris was routinely left inside engines and wiring systems, said The American Prospect, a magazine known for its fact-checked investigations into business and government accountability.

I wish I could "freeze frame and copy" a picture from a video. But, V Ramesh the lone survivor of
the crash did not have any flip flops or shoes on as he walked away from the crash. He had a dark
sock on his right foot and his left foot was bare. (I know it was confusing when I first viewed the
tapes.) But it makes sense if he was thrown from the wreckage, where the plane broke in half, still strapped in his seat and "I think" his cell phone would have been in his back pocket, not damaged and easily accessed.
Adding a link to a short video and WS'ers can see his feet and he also has a slight limp.
***This poor man has gone through so much. And, will eventually have to get back home to England? I can't even imagine going to an airport again.

Im sorry but I don’t believe this story at all.

Who doesn’t tell their wife & family what flight they are on. Or that they’ve had to stay working away for a couple more days.

Somebody trying to get publicity I think.
Over 40 years working with various airlines, Cathay, Emirates, Gulf and Malaysian Airlines….also a solo F/A for 20 of those years….I could right a book on the anomalies and nuances of passengers and where family members/loved ones would have no idea where they are.

How to deal with fear of flying (explained in the article): cognitive restructuring, relaxation techniques, cope ahead, distraction, support, gradual exposure, seek professional help.
We used to suggest a ride in a Simulator (not cheap) perhaps around A$400 whereby a Pilot would take them through all stages of flight (even taking it to the extremes so they can see the capabilities of aircraft).
