Florida:

The confirmed case count of COVID-19 in Florida has jumped by 231, according to a state update on Monday evening. Miami-Dade accounted for 69 cases, or about one-third, of the latest confirmed increase.

The state, with 5,704 confirmed cases (5,489 residents) as of 6 p.m. Monday, also said there were eight new deaths for a total of 71. One of those was in Miami-Dade County, another in Broward County and two in Palm Beach County. The other deaths were in Citrus, Clay, Duval and Osceola counties.”

“Florida currently has just 63 coronavirus deaths, but a disturbing new analysis predicts the death toll will rise to 6,766 by Aug. 4.

The analysis by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington under the direction of professor Chris Murray also predicts that Florida will face a peak shortage of 843 intensive care unit hospital beds.

The need for ICU beds will peak on May 3 in Florida, according to the report. The state will need 2,538 beds on that day, but only 1,695 will be available.”

“The fate of the Holland America’s Zaandam cruise ship has stirred plenty of chatter in coronavirus-battered South Florida. With four dead passengers and hundreds of passengers and crew members reporting flu-like symptoms, the cruise ship is heading to Port Everglades and seeking permission to dock. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has said he doesn’t want the ship to dock in South Florida because the coronavirus is already overwhelming doctors with an influx of ill patients. Others see it as a moral issue, saying the community cannot turn its back to people in need.

Here’s a sampling of the many Letters to the Editor the South Florida Sun Sentinel has received on the fate of the Holland Americ cruise ship.”

Florida shatters records with over 10,000 new COVID-19 cases in single day

“(Reuters) - Florida shattered records on Thursday when it reported over 10,000 new coronavirus cases, the biggest one-day increase in the state since the pandemic started, according to a Reuters tally.

Outbreaks in Texas, California, Florida and Arizona have helped the United States break records and send cases rising at rates not seen since April.

In June, Florida infections rose by 168% or over 95,000 new cases. The percent of tests coming back positive has skyrocketed to 15% from 4% at the end of May.“

So is this their revised mantra from “Florida is the great success story”?
Sorry, you can’t play this down!!

On record-breaking day, Mike Pence says Florida in a ‘much better place’ in coronavirus fight

The coronavirus case numbers are worse than ever in Florida.

But on Thursday, Vice President Mike Pence came to Tampa with a message for the Sunshine State: Florida is in a good position to weather the storm.
......
Despite the upbeat attitude of the news conference, Florida faces a daunting reality. Some testing sites in the state’s hot spots routinely run out of supplies with a line of cars still waiting. Hospitalizations are on the rise, particularly in south Florida. Although elderly Floridians have made up a disproportionate amount of the state’s death toll, an 11-year-old boy in Miami-Dade was one of 68 new victims of the disease reported by the state Thursday.
......
The visit was another marker in the dramatic shift in the prognosis for Florida in recent weeks. A state once heralded by Trump for its low positive testing rate is now seeing one of the worst outbreaks in the world. White House officials acknowledge they are paying attention to developments here.

It is interesting to go read the posts on this thread in the beginning of April. The handwriting was already on the wall.

I believe that there is still a significant undercount. And I also believe that the state prison system is probably completely overwhelmed by this virus. I wouldn't be surprised if getting employees to come to work is also a huge problem.

People keep worrying about schools...I believe that the "silent" problem has been the prison system.

Jails here in my Central Fl. area have been over run w/ the virus, but not much news covering it unless a reporter calls the individual sheriffs.

Yesterday in Tampa a reporter asked DeSantis if he takes responsibility for the high case numbers, he ignored the question and instead touted the low number of deaths (which we all know has been fudged).
Also yesterday Pence was asked about the Repub Convention coming to Jacksonville next month, since Jax has now been named the worst affected city, he just blabbed on and on about the great testing job Fl. has done, blah blah blah- never asnwered the question.
dodge and divert.

City of Sarasota makes masks mandatory

We have a relatively new Detwiler's in town just down the street from me. I went in there for the first time today. Even early on a Saturday it was crowded and some geniuses were not wearing face masks. Normally I shop at Publix and I have not yet made an assessment on exactly how much I saved because Detwiler's does not have everything I need (cleaning supplies; they don't carry jugs of white vinegar?) so I'll have to pick that up at Ollie's Discount.

I probably won't go there on a regular basis, the positives I did find were the produce (bought some purple asparagus for 2.99), very large selection of vitamins and natural/organic toiletries, candies, and a few other things. I really had to look at the chicken because some of it looked sick.

Still working from home - attended a mandatory virtual meeting with our CEO this past Thursday, and with the lease on the local office ending in May 2021, (head office is in Knoxville, TN), may be permanent. Not a bad thing.

Infectious disease specialist: Florida 'heading a million miles an hour in the wrong direction'

"It's absolutely the saddest thing, the most unnecessary situation that we're finding ourselves in," Marty said. "And it's behaviorally driven."

It's shocking and some of them at least where I live are still holding parties and gatherings in their homes when they are not supposed to. I just wish I could understand why there are so many people from out of state down here - in July! Is there anyone left in New York State?

Detwilers is always crowded on Saturday. I never, ever go then. They close at 8:00pm. If I must go, I go about 7:30pm and always during the week. There are 3-4 locations in the area now.

Their meats and seafood have always been the best quality from what I’ve seen over the years. Their deli is so much cheaper. My marine biologist will inspect the seafood counter every time. LOL!

I’m not surprised your office may close instead of renewing the lease. I loved working from home. The last 2 years of my career were remote.
